I took a pay cut also. I needed to do something easier on the body and this is by far the easiest driving job in the industry.

Nope, I have the easiest job in the industry. I drive 1,500 miles a week, get home at least 4 nights, with weekends off, and minimum pay guarantee of $1150 with decent benefits. No labor involved either. I hope to get hired at Walmart for the pay. I also like their PTO.

There ARE higher paying driving jobs, but they are primarily specialty jobs, not the 'norm' in the industry! The oil fields were a gold mine, but not very secure. A guy on my program when I was at Toby came from North Dakota after the bottom dropped out. But as for who pays best (and certainly treats drivers as important assets rather than dirt) in the GENERAL trucking industry, Walmart takes first place. If you haul nuclear waste, gold bars for the government, super-hazardous materials, specialized freight etc, you're not in the GENERAL trucking industry, so the comparison is not on par. For anyone hauling commodities from point A to B, this is the best job out there. And as you said, there are other considerations besides money. I did not take a pay cut, but I did leave a Mon-Fri home every day, no weekends job making the same, but I wanted to drive for Walmart, it was a dream, a goal, and as I see it, a major accomplishment! Almost four years later I'm making more than I ever dreamt I would, and actually love this job more as time goes by. I've said this before and I'll say it again to anyone sitting on the fence...jump off the fence, and make sure you land on the Walmart side! It won't be long before you too will pinch yourself every day to make sure you're not dreaming. And after three years when you're at full rate and you've long gotten the hang of things, you're going to be amazed at what your checks will look like. You'll love your checks pretty much from the start, but I can tell you, they're nothing compared to what they will be after you hit full rate.

Apparently I was the only one out of 10, then it took them 3 months to find three more. I went to orientation where there were supposed to be 6 of us, two were disqualified prior to orientation, one quit halfway through his mentoring, and another one got fired for reasons I'm unaware of. I would tell anyone who gets in, don't take it for granted! There are guys who have been trying for 10-15 YEARS to get on, I got in with 6.5 years driving thanks to a perfect record...and a lot of luck! They accept (I was told by a reliable source) anywhere from 200-400 applications PER OPENING! THAT'S why it takes so long to get a call or to see any progress on your status. HR told me they took 200 apps for my opening, narrowed it down to 37, and I was the winner. So again, don't take it for granted if you get the job. It's a hell of am accomplishment!
