I finally learned how to secure coils

I get thin metal, but WOW! Never seen that-chains and corner protectors???

 

Forgive my ignorance, I haul cars so I'll never haul a coil but.....

I assume the big deal w a coil is you have a 20,000 (or so) pound of metal in a shape that wants to roll away. In a crack it wants to roll off the front of the trailer pass through the sleeper, cab, hood and into the front seat of the car you hit.. is that correct?

If so, why can't you load it sideways? Seems to my dumb non flatbed hauling self that sideways would greatly reduce the tendency for it to want to flatten everything from here to yonder in a crash. Yes, of course it still needs to be well secured so it also does not try roll off sideways, but in a frontal crash at least it's not gonna want to roll end over end nearly as much as if it were "straight"

I then saw the pic of the coil that was in fact sideways. So why not do it like that all the time?

Again, please forgive my ignorance.. always looking to learn more, especially about flat beds. If I ever quit cars that's probably where I'll go.. (but that tarping looks like a real pain...Lol)

 

You can load it sideways,.. thats called shot gun style. The other is called suicide. Not even joking. There is also eye to the sky,.. usually smaller coils.

However,.. depending on where its going,.. certain receivers need the coil to be loaded a certain way in order to accommodate how they will be unloaded it.

In either case,.. a coil loaded shot gun or eye to the sky can still come crashing through the back of your headache rack and sleeper to kill you if not secured properly.

When it comes to coils, I usually add 2 more chains than what the WLL calls for. I've seen pictures of wrecks where the coil had more than enough chains to be considered properly secured and legal,.. yet the chains ripped the deck in half and the coil came flying through the entire cab anyway.

Wow... Note to self, "If you ever move over to a flatbed, make every effort to avoid coils"

 

I still do coils from time to time. They should be respected,.. not feared.

Nothing wrong with respecting something from a distance though.. LOL

 

Any load can come crashing through the cab and kill you. Not just coils.

This is why open deck requires a driver with common sense and a vigilant attitude while driving.

Do you believe any of those vehicles you haul cant come crashing through the back of your cab?

If properly secured they are not coming through the cab. You could roll the truck over and still have them attached if properly secured.
