Okay, I've gotten myself into another debate elsewhere, and I'm unable to find anything specific regarding either being in or out of gear at an extended stop light. From what I can recall, it's perfectly legal to sit for an extended time in neutral. There's someone else stating that per regulation, the truck must be kept in gear while stopped or the driver is not considered in control of the vehicle. Does anyone else know the specific regulation regarding this, if there is one? As I said, I've been trying to find it, but haven't yet. Any help finding it is appreciated.

I don't hold my clutch in for extended red light either.

Do you know of any regs regarding that, though?

I've never heard of any regs. I'll put my truck in neutral in freeway traffic jams.

I would love to hear the "rationalization" for "not being in control" if you are holding the brake while in neutral. I am certain most drivers have, at least once, had their foot slip off the clutch pedal, or the leg just slack enough from fatigue, to unintentionally pop the clutch and lurch forward. The risk, I think, is to hold the clutch for an extended period and risk such a "failure". Regardless, If I know the light is a long one, I go to neutral and i am the only one who knows.
If there is actually a regulation regarding this, I have not read it and I have not heard of it. If it exists, I am deaf to it.Diesel Dave, Moon_beam, ShooterK2 and 2 others Thank this. -
Interesting discussion. I always put my truck in neutral when I come up to a stop light. I'm unsure about the regulations for it though. But it does sound like something asinine that they would come up with

If I'm the first one at the light, I can usually see the lights on the cross street. So I'll slip into neutral till I see yellow, then get in gear. If I'm way back I'll do the same thing cuz I can see the front of the line start to move and it gives me time to get into gear. I don't hold the clutch unless I feel like I may not have time to get into gear without causing a delay. Lotta times that will get me another red light.
As far as regs I don't know of any. I like to think that occasionally they do allow the driver to think for himself, but I'm probably wrong on that.kylefitzy, MJ1657, pattyj and 1 other person Thank this. -
What if you're driving an automatic....lol

The only time I touch my clutch is to put the tranny in gear from a dead stop.
In short, to specifically answer your question, at almost a dead stop I pull it out of gear, into neutral. I do NOT use my clutch at an extended stop.... or ANY stop for that matter except to put the tranny in gear to take off.
Until someone can prove me wrong, there is no such regulation.OLDSKOOLERnWV, Dave_in_AZ, buddyd157 and 1 other person Thank this.
