Hello all!
I've been lurking for a few weeks now. Passed the PTI/Skills/Road tests this afternoon and have the coveted CDL A. I already have the Tanker endorsement and started the TWIC and HAZMAT process this morning.
I've got pre-hires from three companies and am scheduling phone interviews (I'm interviewing them at this point) and was curious what questions I should ask them.
More importantly, what "Red Flags" should I be looking for during the conversation?
Thanks in advance!
What should I be asking the recruiters?

Ummm..... it depends.
Whats your 20?
Hows your record?
What are your goals?
What do you definitely not want to do?
What are your interests?
Does home time matter?
How about physical labor?
Umm.... it depends.....rabbiporkchop and ExOTR Thank this. -
Ask them for the CEO's home and cell number. That way you have someone to call when you start to figure out you've been lied to.

If you think you might want to run tanker Schneider bulk hires out of school. Maybe @19d or @Chinatown will be by.
Laruuk Thanks this. -
I would ask about the following:
1.Pay and benefits, breakdown and layover pay
2. Hometime
3. Average miles
4.Equipment and equipment policy on home time. Do they have APU s?
5. Forced dispatch?
6. What are main lanes they run/ Major customers?
7. pet policy if you have pets
8. Bonuses, awards, etc
9. Do they have Prepass, EZ Pass and any other toll transponders.Laruuk Thanks this. -
Live in Charleston, SC.
I've got a clean MVR. One speeding ticket just over 4 years ago for 9 over.
My goals are to make somewhere in the neighborhood of $45k/yr minimum.
I can't honestly think of anything I definitely wouldn't do in trucking. I'd prefer not to drive in the NE or Canada, but it's not a deal-breaker. That said, I realize there is a TON of information I don't know - even with me spending the last several weeks reading dozens of threads on this forum.
What are my interests? I want to see the country and make some money. I like the thought of starting out in flatbed.
Home-time doesn't matter. Kids are grown, wife is going back to college to get yet another degree, and I'm used to being gone for extended periods of time.
I'm in okay shape and not scared of physical labor.
I'm 46, recently retired from the military, started a small business and sold it after two years, tried Real Estate and decided not only do I not like sales, my opinion of people was confirmed (95% of people suck).
I've had a couple good conversations with the recruiters, but I realize their job is to get me to orientation and they might stretch the truth to do so. As an inexperienced Driver, I don't know what to ask or listen for. As a business-minded individual I tend to pick up on what I call "common sense violations" pretty quick though. -
I'll be talking to them Wednesday.
