I have an N14 Celect in a '91 Pete. Bought a brand new starter, get it installed and the bloody thing won't engage the flywheel. I can hear it slightly kissing the flywheel teeth but that's it.
My question: Do all Cummins class 8 starters interchange? I was under the impression they're supposed to.
Could my problem be a clocking issue? Three bolts total.![]()

For a reference here is the nose of the old starter.
Pulling the new one right now to see what's up. -
New one is out.
New one has 10 teeth
Old one has 11 teeth
Thanks Swan!!!Oxbow Thanks this. -
When changing to the newer style starter, do you need to remove the spacer on the nose cone?
I'm asking, I don't know.
I remember when I changed mine. I had to install it twice because either I left the spacer out or I put it in and it wasn't needed. I forget which.Oxbow Thanks this. -
The new style gear reduction starters go in as is. No swapping nose cones..
The only thing you might have to do is clock it so the seliniod is on top or bottom, depending on how your old starter was wired.Oxbow Thanks this. -
From my experience those reduction starters don't like the N14. I've tried 3. First one engaged first night while idling and made a mess of flywheel. Second would just bind up. Third constantly over drew amps.
They are great when they work right. Went back to old style no more issues. YMMVOxbow Thanks this. -
Wierd, my experience with the 39mt has been quite the opposite.
I could not make one those pos 42mt last more then 2 years.
Switched all my trucks over 10 years ago and there still going strong. And we start and stop our trucks a lot.Oxbow Thanks this.
