I've had my CDL class A for many years, but no recent documented history driving (years ago I worked on a farm hauling grain during 2 harvest seasons and also took vacation time to do a couple of OTR trips with a friend who let me do most of the driving).

Basically any company is going to see me as a driver with no experience, which is fine by me. I've been researching City/P&D driving for LTL companies. I'm in the Springfield, MO area. Saia has a dock-to-driver program after 90(?) days of dock working, and Estes has an in-house driver training school (if I have read and understand it correctly) after 6 months(?) of employment history.

I've driven past the Springfield Saia terminal and it looks really small. I haven't been by the Estes terminal, but have seen satellite pictures of it online and it does look bigger than Saia's.

Does anybody have any experience working at either of these 2 terminals in Springfield?

Has anybody been through the 'dock-to-driver' programs of either company?

Is there advantages or disadvantages of working at a small terminal?

Ask this question in the LTL forum. Maybe it can be moved? @MACK E-6

@KMB - Dayton Freight also has a Springfield terminal and a dock-to-driver program. Dayton treats us real well.

TransLand is or has been looking for a driver to go to AR each day. It's an hourly wage, I don't know how much. Home every night.

I see they have a Dock Worker position opening. The hours they show look like part-time.

    Can you tell me more.

What is the pay for part-time dock workers?
Is there a dock-to-driver program for the Springfield terminal? I ask this because I have found out that with some companies that offer dock-to-driver programs, the program is at only a few select terminals.
What is the pay for starting City Drivers?

Dock workers start out part time @ $18.20. City drivers start just under $22. Not sure if they have that program at the Springfield terminal, but a quick phone call would get you your answer. We have it at my terminal, but I'm not sure where all we have it or what all is involved.

It's a great deal if you can handle the hours. It's actually the quickest way to become an LTL driver for the most part. Few companies hire drivers straight out of school, and Dayton seems to want several years experience if you hire on from the outside.

ABF Has a location in Springfield as well. They offer some type of CDL school where they fly you out to the corporate location in Arkansas. Might be worth looking into. YRC used to be in that area also...

At the ABF website, they offer 'Driver Training School - City Driver' positions, but none at the terminal close to me (Strafford) right now.

YRC isn't in my area, but Holland is.

Holland is owned by YRC, I know YRC has a driver Training School type deal near me in Chicago area. I'm not sure if they train folks through that location to work for Holland or not... I'd call and find out.
