I am set to start the training course in Appleton in a few weeks and have done some reading about people being sent home. I have only been driving manual transmission about 6 months and don't have any experience in Double clutch, Down shifting (I never down shift in my 5 speed), driving anything bigger or longer than a pick up truck, backing with any sort of trailer, etc... So pretty much everything will be new to me and a lot to take in.

My question is... How patient are they with you to catch the hang of things like backing up a trailer and what not before they send you home and how easy is it to be sent home?? I dont have a problem following directions but every one learns at a different pace and i'm worried every one else may catch the hang of things a bit faster and I will stand out more.

    Thanks!

No worries, I guarantee almost no one in your class will have a clue about double clutching, downshifting, etc. so you won't be alone. Backing a semi trailer is easy, it looks intimidating because of the size but it's easier than backing up a boat. As for only six months experience with a manual... I trained with a girl who never drove a manual in her life, and she did fine. It's really nothing like driving a car so it will be basically a new experience anyway.

I also trained with a guy who crashed into a concrete block during his cdl test. He still passed on the first try and got his own truck. The only person who got sent home from my class was kicked out for doing drugs.

Trust me, you have nothing to worry about! Relax, have fun and good luck with your training and your career.

Leave your ego at home and be drug free. I guarantee they won't send you home if you do that. If you keep trying and apply what they're telling you, you'll do fine.

Even the best drivers started out knowing nothing.

I learn at a very slow pace when it comes to trucking. My third and final test week at school I had just grasped the concept of backing and some how passed. Had to teach myself to back when solo but that's another story.

It ain't rocket surgery! You'll figure it out and very short time.

If you have a truck stop near you go down and watch the fuel Island for a half hour or 45 minutes and look at some of the people climbing out of the trucks. Then ask yourself if they can do it why couldn't you?

lol I've done that many times whenever I go to the Taco Bell there because the drive through pulls straight into and curves past the fuel island of trucks..so while I am sitting there waiting for my chalupa.. I just look straight ahead at some of the truckers standing around. Probably not good if you don't want to live and look that way.

I Started with Roehl but with CDL already in hand..Although the CDL school sucked so bad that I might as well have had zero shifting and backing experience.
Anyway, Roehl is cool, they are patient with you, theyre sort of relaxed about things in general. As long as you always are paying attention, and you are studying your training material and showing general improvement and willingness to learn. they will work with you, give you additional training in certain areas. Just always be paying attention and ask questions and be like you really want to be there. Just know that even during breaks, they are "watching" you....They know who really wants to be there and learn and who doesnt.
Hint: Keep your cellphone off or silenced and rarely pull it out to even look at it during class. They have a pet peeve about that....Even if you pull it out of your pocket and look at it for 1 second and youre seen, the instructor will stop talking and kinda of glare at you.
Theres nothing to worry about with Roehl, like I said Be On time for class, and be attentive and such and everything will be fine. If the time comes to go out on the road and youre not comfortable with your skills, they will provide additional training..

    good luck
