I know, I sound scared, but I'm a small person and larger overpowering people freak me out. Like on the news, nothing but horror stories, don't hear lots of good ones. But transit is an awesome job, I just need to get myself started in something, this coming fall, and work at what I can for now, get some experience, then work my way up the ladder to greener pastures.

800-1200 a day for a truck and quad is all u get these days, not enough to hire a driver really.
An owner with mechanical skills and a place to work can make some money but how are u gonna make payments in the winter?
Hard to even get on a haul these days, too many trucks.
Get setup to go on a job and find its canceled cause someone underbid.
Truth is people get this work through bribes, dirty business.

There is definitely a lot of trucks, lots of construction going on everywhere here so I suppose that makes sense. I'm not too concerned about making truck payments as I can pay cash for the truck. That said though the truck has to pay for itself and me of course..LOL. My challenge is I don't know much about gravel trucks and even how to find work. I've been farming and ranching and had our own semi's hauling livestock mostly and of course grain and fertilizers. Family farm is gone now and I live in Calgary, don't want to go OTR so gravel truck seemed to make sense to me. Driving for someone else like Mike Vail would be an option but $23/hr doesn't seem worth it.

Vail wants u to wash the truck for free 3 times a week, I don't want to wash trucks period, let alone constantly for free for some multimillionaire. Seniority list means new guys don't work too much.

Thats the problem with this industry, they all scream for experienced guys but in the end they just want to play games with u.

Correct me if Im wrong but I thought cattle was one of the only good things going these days, population explosion in Asia guarante Alberta beef will be a winner forever and ever, baring another BSE outbreak.

Livestock hauling is not always the best either, if your an O/O and you have your own trailer you can hang out at auction marts and hope you can get a load. Better in the fall and winter however. If you know a cattle buyer than you can stay busy, or find a carrier to hire on with. Again though it is seasonal as there is not a lot of cattle moving right now. Probably start up in Sept and Oct then busy till late spring. I would go that route but I want to be home every night. So a gravel truck was an option ...but if you can't find work whats the point I guess.

    Take a
Take a look around you, our federal government, through its immigration policies, have provided thousands of people willing to work for less, violate NCS and HOS regs, all to provide the rich with cheap trucking. Everyone of these companies that is paying so low is highly profitable and have executives that make obscene amounts of money. We live in a democracy and we only have ourselves to blame for the situation.

Look at all the catastrophic truck accidents these days, its the rich taking a dump on our foreheads.

There is a term for it, corporations externalizing their costs and risks to the public.

The biggest crock in Canada, most of these companies aren't even Canadian anymore, they just funnel the money out of the country.

Jeez, even the famous coffee shop monopoly is owned by Brazilians now, 1 Billion in profits last year alone, whoosh, all that money gone, out of the country. Look at how they staff! People on minimum wage or near to it all enjoying free healthcare, schooling for their kids and much more.

Its time for revolution, the Federal government has become the enemy of the people.
