Exactly. If the company I work for will not pay the $50-$100 every year or two for a physical they are likely skimping on other pay. Not a place I would want to work. I mean even the bottom feeding megas pay for it....
Now if one is a true IC then yes, I would expect to pay for it myself.

    DTP and pattyj Thank this.

Physical is part of the hiring process which means all carriers should pay.How about the drug test and randoms should drivers pay for that I think not.

The difference is the OP is asking for a hand out from a "program" ---aka- taxpayer funded freebie. Sorta like a Obama phones or cable assistance for the needy. Stuff working people had to pay for in their bill and didn't know it..Personally I'm sick of that attitude. A mega (or a mini) company may pay because they want you, you passed the initial orientation. You are an investment.

Not that it really matters, but I paid my own CDL school tuition, CDL tests, paid for my own first physical, paid for DMV records, initial required urine testing, TWIC, passport, and I paid my own transportation to an out-of-state orientation that I wasn't sure if I would even get the job. How did I do it? I sold something dear to me (a car) because I believed this career was more important. I was right. Best decision ever.

I get bothered by people who cannot grasp the concept of paying for your own future. If nobody will pay your physical, what then - just give up? Arrrg!!!

So is having a CDL. Corrective lenses if needed. Shoes. Clothes. Gloves. A flashlight. Map..... at what point is the company no longer responsible?

I understand your point, but I don't think it should be expected.

You should do some research. The "Obama phone" wasn't an Obama program. It's much older than that stemming from the land line days. It's also not funded by tax payers.

Sorry but if you didn't pay for it then someone else did. Even if the money didn't come from "taxes", that money was extracted from people unwillingly by way of government mandated "utility fees".
Either way, someone else paid for it.
