Roehl is a great place to start! Congrats! Yes, it is a change for all concerned but the rewards are great. My advice is work hard, communicate, be patient with yourself and have fun.

I'm definitely gonna do my best. This is something I have wanted to do since I was a kid and I'm gonna do my best not to mess up this chance to do it because I might not get another one. I plan on running my ### off to provide a better living for my family. I will stay in touch with my dispatcher to keep me moving and let them know far enough in advance to when I would like to get home. Communication is key in most jobs, my current employer doesnt seem to get that. I am a pretty patient person, especially on the road so I don't think that will be an issue. Have fun? You gotta have fun.....or its no fun! Lol thank you for the advice. Every little tidbit helps

I just started training this week at the Dallas terminal. So far I'm impressed with the program.

    Congrats and good luck.

Hey bud, literally just graduated with my CDL this last Thursday and Im set to head out with my trainer Monday. If you have any questions just ask as I attended the Appleton facility as well and it was a great and enjoyable experience. My best advice would be dont give up and dont get discouraged no matter what anyone says or what you think. I went into the program with 0 experience, never even backing a boat trailer and grinding every gear I put it into... Now I have completed it after a full 3 weeks and have my CDL with only 8 points on the road test (had a strict tester who marked every grind)

Thanks for the advice. Its good to be able to talk to someone who is currently there or just was there. I'm really anxious right now and not overly thrilled about leaving my wife for so long. Any tips on coping with the emotional stuff of leaving your family for so long? They allow you to wear shorts in training since it will be so warm?

    Wisconsinguy Thanks this.

There is no problem with shorts most of the trainers wear them as well and you do not need steel toes im assuming you will be in the Reefer division with me since your going to Appleton. I only say that because I was told to bring them and only wore my tennis shoes. Also they say you need work gloves but I didnt use them even once in the reefer division. Just bring some if you dont want dirty hands during pre-trip. Unfortunately I dont have any advice on how to cope with that as I live 30 minutes from appleton and drove home every weekend but my roomate and other guys seemed to cope with it well by calling and skyping their family back in the hotel every day. Bring a laptop, tablet or download skype on your phone. The hotel has nice free wifi and their is a comfortable upstairs lobby where you can get some privacy to talk with them.
