I have not read any of the other replies. I thought about this question for several minutes. I was about to agree with the answers yes it was better to not know. Then after a few minutes I realized it really don't matter. Shifting a heavy class 8 Truck simply is not the same as shifting a car. In a car the Transmission does most all the work for you. To successfully learn to shift a class 8 truck you must learn a completely new skill. You shift based on feel and the sounds made by the engine. You just don't do this in a car.Diesel Dave, x1Heavy and G13Tomcat Thank this.

Ok I've got a question while we're on the subject, does anyone have any first hand knowledge of anyone failing a skills test because they didn't use the clutch?
-
I believe the poster was referring to a 15 speed double overdrive transmission as spoke about in this old thread. I drove one of these several years ago.

Hmmm... when I first get home, I find myself miles down t he road before realizing that I never used t he clutch but somehow I am cruising at 70 in 5th gear.
