In 1981, fresh out of college I bought a well used L9000 day cab, 290 10 spd to drag a hopper bottom grain wagon hauling my dad's ag products to Gainesville and Savannah, GA. The next year I bought a 79 co Freightshaker, 400 and 13 spd with 433 rears. That thing would turn the world over. Went busted after I bought a second truck which through me into a company driver job. Poole Truck Lines out of Evergreen, AL..
After a few years driving for Poole and being a young man of 26, I was stuck in Texarkana and told my dispatcher to route me back to Macon,,,,, Macon, GA that is. He asked, what's up? Told him I was goin back to school, didn't want to be swapping gears at 50 years old.
I came back home, went to school and paid for it while running a D7-G at the local landfill after school. Worked industrial and construction electrician for almost 30 years. Those construction jobs remind me of how trucking used to be. Lolz,,,,, Yeah, you laugh mofo, you know what I'm talkin about.
It's been over 30 years now and I'm back doin what I told my old dispatcher I didn't want to be doing. Funny how time changes things. I'm happy as a blue bird. Sure, trucking has changed a lot from back in the day what with all the more traffic. I am very surprised at the lack of respect from other drivers though. I don't mean that personally but as a whole. Drivers flying through lots like it's a dern racetrack, trying to squeeze in front of you at a shipper or final.
It's okay though. I'm back driving and I feel great,,,, should have never quit.
I like my company, I like my truck, I like our mechanics and I like my dispatcher.
Admins, mods,,, if this isn't in the right place, flog me,,, but kiss me afterwards. ;-)

How old are you sir, if I may ask?

We get many people who show up and ask if they are too over the hill to start doing this job. Your story could serve as an inspiration to them.

Well thank you Mack. Let me guess, R or F model? :)

I'm 56. If I may, I'd like to encourage folks from our day, back in the sixties, to go for it. It's kind of like being reborn again. Sure, body parts hurt when ya get up but just think, thank goodness ya can get up and get moving. We're still knights of the road,,, I firmly believe that and am proud to be part of the truckerhood again. Please let folks our age know that I welcome any questions they may have.
EDIT: Anyone is welcome to message me on getting started driving. Young guns and old pharts alike. No, I'm not a recruiter. I am an operator. ;-)

Welcome back Sir. Not often we get retreads and can use more of you. Im past 50 myself but we'll see. Im happy not to be trucking, but if I did I would be right back where I was when I stopped doing it out of Memphis.

Life has many things for many people. If you enjoy your time then that's what matters. Good luck!

    I'm actually an R-model fan.

I chose to name myself after the engines commonly found in them. Their report just annouces "tough, bulletproof, and reliable", which they were with proper maintenance.

Agreed. I consider myself somewhat a talented driver with certain macks myself provided that they have the off road cross rib drive tires. I had a CH brand new one year that I took into Babcock Ridge near Altoona, which is a 220 degree hairpin turn rated at 10 mph then a 3 mile pull in the worst of ice loaded up and empty flatbed back down almost daily weekly. No problems with that particular mack. It was one of my most agile goats I guess you would call it in that type of service.

That was a long time ago on another forum, though.
