On June 1st for the first time in my car hauling career since 2002 I did a 10-car load and forgot the two pins on the swing deck.
I created a post around that time called "It Can Happen To You."

It cost me my $3,000 safety bonus with an additional $2,000. Liability caps off at $5,000 and my company valued me enough not to fire me.

Ever since that day I have been triple checking everything. One day I walked around my truck 3 times checking every single pin and then I went about a mile down the road and pulled over on the shoulder and got out and checked everything again. Sometimes I'm afraid to take off and go down the road lest I forget something, acquiring another damage claim.

I've done a couple 10 car loads since then but I guess I'm going to be in shock for a while and there's probably no such thing as over checking and it certainly better than finding out that you forgot to pin a deck and then it's too late.

Anyone been there and done that?

Just be careful there is such a thing as being too cautious.Focus on everything and not just that dreaded load.

Sounds like a job where I would have to have a written check list on my walk around!

image.jpeg image.jpeg I totally understand how you feel.
When I get that uneasy sixth sense feeling when I drive down the road it's straight to the shoulder for me for a check over.
My motto has always been check it then recheck it then check it again.
loads like this really make me nervous and uneasy.

@MooneyBravo , the best way to do it is to make checking the pins the last step on every stop as your heading back to the cab. The bottoms can be checked as you set the tops, and you can visually see the tops as you walk around. I would stand back a bit, and hit each post visually with my finger as I went from front to back. Do that and you know you've checked them, and don't have to sweat it.

Thanks I feel like I've gotten to a point where I just don't trust myself anymore.
I mean I know I checked the pins but it's like once or twice is not enough

The guy who trained me out it this way:

Figure out what you did wrong, and move on. If you worry about it too much, you will damage something else because you're too focused on one thing.

The human factor, happens to the best of us even on our best day. You had a bad day which was costly. You know you have to move on. A lesson learned knowledge gained. Keep it safe. The best thing nobody got hurt.

Unfortunately it's a what have you done lately business. If you look at it that way and you didn't damage anything, you started a new damage free streak. Keep it going and quit looking back!
