I'm buying a ex-US Express 587 in a week. It has the Bendix system. Is it going to be difficult to remove or should I not mess with it?

Just turn it off. Or pay a dealer to turn it off. Quicker. Otherwise you're going to have to remove the radar unit from the bumper and then turn it off anyways because it'll throw faults because it can't locate the radar.

I'm wondering if it will interfere with my cruise control if it throws faults

It will - it will kick out the cruise control, which is why you need to disable it rather than just remove the radar.

Can you ask them to disable the system as a condition of the sale?

Not sure about freightliner but on my Volvo they will not remove the system as it is tied into the ABS cruse control as well as other system. I just unplug it and roll. It dose show a check light but I can live with that.

That system is tied into the cruise control which is run by the engine ECM. It has to be disabled in the ECM and ABS systems. Since you are downgrading a safety feature, there is too much liability that the dealer could be responsible for should you get into an accident. So I wish you luck in finding someone willing to take that risk. Waivers mean nothing anymore.

If that was the case they wouldn't be selling trucks without it.

Did you ask your insurance if they will give you a discount if you have the system?

Well I know for a fact Volvo won't disable the system because of liability issues. Oh and btw it looks like these systems will become mandatory on heavy trucks in the near future.
