Well after being a bartender for many years, I just graduated last week from truck driver training school. I got a pre-hire from transam & am leaving Monday. The orientation starts on Weds. Then if they like me (i sure hope so) the send me out with a trainer for 4-6 weeks. I have been out of work for 4 months got laid off. If possible I will keep you up to date on my progress,miles.... I sure hope this works out for me. I am ready to lose everything. Any sugestions will be appreciated like a gps system for truckers. I have heard alot of bad things about the co-pilot truck & the teletype. Is there anything else out there that is a gps unit that would help with load wieght,bridges...

Welcome to the truckin industry. Just remember that it is a job,and everyday aint gonna be rosy.If you are willing to work, have a good attitude, you will make out just fine. True its gonna turn your whole life around, not knowing where your gonna be tomorrow, sleeping in a truck, maybe in 70 degree weather today and 0 degree weather tomorrow, but I always found that if today was a bad day, tomorrow is usually a better one.Its just a different life, but its still a job.
panhandlepat Thanks this. -
Good Luck and start every day with a smile

I have a garmim street pilot 330 & it has a car/motorcyle,truck & bus settings. I have the feeling it will not be a truck route I might need. But it could help I hope & not get me screwed up. My main concern will be birdge heights, restricted roads & of couse not getting lost. -
Use the GPS to get your route but them go road by road and bounce it off a truckers atlas for road restrictions, bridge height, and so on.
NEVER just blindly trust a GPS. It's a great tool to ease trips rolling through many major cities and with lots of road changes and such but it will get you in trouble in a hurry if you don't use your head and cross check every route it gives you.panhandlepat and melanie Thank this. -
Stay away from teletype!!! It is junk and customer service is poor. It could only find half the addresses I put in to it. The manual even states it may have difficulty finding addresses and says, "...try the nearest intersection or a nearby town." Now isn't that great! Maybe it can at least get me to a town near where I want to go. People buy GPS units to get them to an address and they are happy getting you to the next town. I have tried for months to return it and get my money back to no avail. My attorney sent them a demand letter and I have received no response. I will be calling them tomorrow and if they still refuse I will be taking them to small claims court in New Mexico for the $419.00 plus filing complaints with the New Mexico Attorney General's office and the Boston Better Business Bureau.

I have heard & read about the problems with teletype & alot of problems with co-pilot 11 truck. Has anyone heard about how good truckmiles is? All feedback would be great. I leave for orientation in just a couple of hours.

Good luck BBB; just stay calm and keep an open mind. Trucking is a whole different lifestyle, and a good attitude will take you far. So take care and keep in touch.
Were you bartending near EMU? I know the bars were always busy on Friday and Sat. nite- I lived in Ypsi Township for a while, while attending EMU. That was a fun time!
Oh yeah, the GPS is a handy tool, but remember not to follow it blindly- otherwise you may find yourself in some nasty spots. I always tried to call shippers, or ask drivers (on ch 19), because that worked better. -
Good Luck to you.
