I was thinking about how shifters have changed over the years. Today, I drive a car hauler with an automatic transmission and I am spoiled and I love it. In 37 years I've done all the shifting that I need to do. I've driven many trucks and a few were very unique. I even got to drive a truck with 2 sticks called a duplex. That was sure different.
21 speed Spicer was interesting. I was thinking about how things used to be and found some pictures.

This is what a range shifter used to look like before they started using the shift switch that you see today.

This is a classic Eaton Fuller 13 speed shifter. I couldn't find a pic of this style knob for 18.

I couldn't find a picture of an 18 speed shifter knob but here is the pattern diagram.

Here's a video of a 20 speed/2 stick.

That last picture of the Eaton 13 spd is the first one I ever drove in a Freightliner Cabover.
MooneyBravo Thanks this. -
Very cool, interesting, and following~! Will contribute as I can when the wife coughs up some photos.
MooneyBravo Thanks this. -
If I remember correctly, that button stayed in Low for the first four gears and then you moved it to direct and started over and you could split between direct and over for a total of 12 gears.
If you add granny gear you come up with 13.
Hence: 13 speed. -
I remember a 13 like that in a 76 KW cabover
Somewhere around 1980 1982 I was running containers back and forth between Cleveland Ohio and Dundalk in Baltimore.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
I don't recall this version in 18 speed. Truck stops pedalled all sorts of swanky shift knobs before integral shifters hit market early '80's
Oldironfan, MooneyBravo, LWT104 and 1 other person Thank this. -
My 15 speed roadranger has a modern knob on it with the blue button on the side. I might go full oldschool with it and put a knob with only a range valve and put deep reduction air switch back up on the dash.
MooneyBravo and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
Maybe find old school park knob as well

Yeh, It was similar to the 13 but it only had a 2 position air switch(Direct/Over) on the side seeing as you could split all 9 gears. With the 18 you could split 5 on the bottom and 4 on the top. The 18 had the range shifter T valve (above) where the 13 used the Low switch for the bottom, Dir/Over for the top. (Best I can remember)Last edited: Jul 16, 2017
