Con-way to close 40 U.S. service centers

DETROIT, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Trucking and logistics company Con-way Inc said on Monday that it will close 40 of its U.S. service centers, bringing savings of up to $40 million annually.
A company spokesman said Con-way estimated that total job losses could total around 1 percent of its workforce of 20,400. The company said that up to 75 percent of the employees at the locations affected would have the opportunity to work in a different location.
Con-way stressed that it was not exiting any markets and customers would continue to receive the same services.

Trucking company moving jobs here

Columbus will gain jobs at the expense of other Ohio cities as a trucking company trims 40 locations nationwide.
Con-way Freight, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., plans to close operations in Lancaster, Lima, Mansfield and Mentor, leaving 16 locations in Ohio.
The Columbus operation, at 2625 Westbelt Dr. on the Far West Side, will remain open and bring on some of the workers displaced by the closures, spokesman Gary Frantz said.

"All customers we serve today in Lancaster, as well as the other Ohio locations that are closing, will continue to receive service," he said. "The only difference is after Nov. 17, Lancaster customers will be serviced from Columbus."

Con-way has 1,370 employees in Ohio, 200 in Columbus and 35 in Lancaster. Frantz said most of the Lancaster employees will be offered jobs in Columbus, although he said it's too early to know a specific number.
