Hey everyone, tossing around the idea of going OTR. Been out of it for a very long time (1997). However, I have maintained my CDL and have maintained driving locally as well. Anyways, not sure what companies to look at and what to really look for. Here is a little about me to help you point me in the right direction.

    43 YO
CDL A with doubles\triples and tanker but no hazmat (willing to get it again)
Spotless driving record (last ticket in 1998) also no accidents
Currently driving a log truck. working about 60 hours a week but also bring home 1000 to 1100 a week (1099)
    off weekends
kids are grown and gone, just wife and I. Probably bring her with if it pays enough

No sure what else to add

    Where is your location?
There's some decent companies that will hire you and let you take the wife along.

Ok, two ways to do this. One, check Craigslist for the smaller companies that allow the wife to ride along. Sometimes they pay on 1099 and some on W-2.
Another way, is the larger companies with the fancy, decked out trucks. Just submit some applications and wait. Probably get some job offers in a day or two.
Here's a few that allow the wife to ride along:
Holland Enterprises Inc. - can take wife to orientation with you. Average run is about 1400 miles.
    • Air Ride Tractors and Reefer Trailers
    • Cruise Control
    • Qualcomm
    • Satellite TV and Radio
    • Air Slide 5th Wheel
    • Engine Brakes
    • Power Mirror
    • Tri-Pac APUs on every truck in fleet
    • Inverters
    • Refrigerator/Freezer
    • Pet Policy
    • Owner/Operator Lease-Purchase Program

Here's some more & can take wife:
Abilene Motor Express - 72 mph trucks, coast to coast dry van & refrigerated.
Britton Transport - no insurance fee for the wife to ride; it's free.
Danny Herman Trucking - freight lanes are south of I-40 and lots of Southern California and Texas border town runs. Nice trucks set up for comfort.
Freymiller - coast to coast refrigerated trucking. Runs average 1000 miles.
Magnum Ltd. - good reputation with drivers.

Melton Truck Lines - is a decent flatbed company with fancy trucks set up for comfort. Coast to coast runs. Not sure you'll make the same money as with the refrigerated outfits, but you can check it out.

Agree with Chinatown except on one point, waiting a day or two to hear from companies you apply to. I was getting phone calls within 30 mins of submitting online applications.

I would spend some time on the various subforums here and narrow down what you think you might like doing. Reefer, flatbed, tanker etc, also do you want to get home on a regular basis which might mean looking for regional companies or do you want to see the country in which case you want a 48 state running company.

    Chinatown Thanks this.

I was looking online for companies that allow you to be local or otr you might want to check out Schnider IC (independent contractor) board you pretty much dispatch your self on the computer allowing you to plan out where ever you choose to go other than that I would of said Interstate but they just got bought out by Heartland express I think and i dont kno how that's going to be
