I've been union for the past 2 years, by far the best job in my 5 years driving. Pay is good, bennies are good. OT after 8/40, doubletime on holidays plus holiday pay (all OT & holidays are voluntary). Plenty of paid time off. Work with lots of great people too.
Any union drivers here?

Oh yea and pension funds never go broke and are protected.
Oh wait a minute yes they do and no they are not.
I could never base a decision on something that can be taken from you years and years later.
How about the fact that when you retire....any job you take as part time...has to be approved by the union!! They own your ###...for what!!?? A "promise" down the road!? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.
I will gladly work for you today for a (maybe) hamburger next Tuesday!!

well in my beginnings, i was non -union. i did "ok" with most jobs i had, but the supervisors messed around with the drivers, playing favorites with the ones they liked.
then i got a job with an LTL company running nights, known as line haul. i started at the bottom as any new hire would. i think i was number 14 back then. but drivers quitting or transferring to another terminals, i quickly (about 2 years) got up to being #3. (i stayed at #3 when i left as well).
i got good pay, good benefits (actually BETTER than non union), and regular pay raises, as per the contract, so i never had to ask for a raise. the equipment was ok, not the best, not the worst, but at least as well maintained as can be.
the supervisors could NOT play favorites, they had to go by the list, for any extra work to be offered. unlike a non-union company, where the boss can play his favorites games.
i liked my time with the union job, but a better job, (esser hours for a tad bit more money), and i jumped ship. i don't look back at the decision i made and regret it one bit.
it was an experience i liked being a part of, but i do wish i had started at a union job when i first got out of driving school, the sad part of that, "you had to know someone" and at first, i did not. until a few years later, and i was friends with 2 teamsters guys.
i should point out, my union job was not a teamsters job, those guys couldn't get me into thiers.
would i take another union job if one came along?
maybe, it would now all depend on where i'd be on the seniority list, which WOULD be at the bottom, but how many drivers would be ahead of me, would determine a move on my part.
257 drivers? no way
2 drivers? YES in a flash! -
Why don't you tell us how you really feel. Lolmoloko Thanks this.

I prefer union. Negatives here and there, but the overall reason you're working to begin with is to make money. Union pays a lot more. End of story.

I was in a union when i was 18 at a steal mill, we went on strike and the first week out the union went broke and couldn't pay us. Two months walking a line for them to settle for 25 cents more a day. Never again.

I wonder how many jobs went bye bye because of union strikes.
I know delta airlines had a couple of close calls. And i can't remember who it was but the president has actually had to step in a couple of times. Can't remember if it was bush or obama. -
Anyone remember hostess?
buddyd157 Thanks this. -
We all grew up on them. There was a store down the street from where my dad lived in indianapolis. You could buy wholesale.
