You're supposed to find direct freight in your local market that you can run regularly at a rate similar to what brokers are getting paid. If that direct freight is consistently to the same place you can do the same thing coming back and never deal with a broker again... But if that outbound freight is going to varying places it will NEVER make sense for you to land customers in all of those places. And that's where brokers come in.
I'm a broker and I couldn't care less where a customer is located. This is because I am location independent. I can do business with anyone and I'm not trying to figure out how to put a truck where the customer has a load... I just whistle up one of the many local trucks in the spot market for that area that day.
The reality is that sales calls are worth a lot more to me than any but the largest trucking companies. And even they care more about where it's going than nearly anything else because they have objectives around where the equipment ends up.
Bottom line if there were no freight brokers you'd have no freight and would have to go home for free after you hauled a load for your customer. There have always been freight brokers, even before the internet and the fax machine. The freight broker just used to be a local business man who was officed at the truck stop and would post what he needed covered on a 'loadboard' inside the truck stop.
We are your sales department basically. We go out and find as many loads as we can and then offer them to the market. Trust me when I say that finding loads is hard enough without putting 'must be going from x to y' into it.

Keep on dreaming boys. But remember that the wide open nature of the trucking business is what keeps all of us so well paid. All of us should be happy as pigs in #### about the fact that there are literally thousands of transportation companies all vying to hire us. More consolidation means worse wages for everyone. That's just what big companies do.

If having your own fleet made all the sense, then why does stores like Aldi, Meyers, Home Depot outsource the transportation? It's neither right or wrong, it's just they way they do business. Dollar general & dollar tree outsource store delivers, but hobby lobby doesn't, is one better than the other? -

If you get what yuou want, you haul the freight. If not you move on. What difference does it make what the broker makes?
What I hear when I see posts like this is "I'm too stupid to be in business
Those that haul the freight obviously got what you wanted. No i didn't i had to take this crap freight. No you didn't, you chose to accept t he rate. Can't blame a broker for that.
If a broker sells transportation of 10k for 100 miles and he pays you 5k to haul it, what is wrong with that?
