Hey all,
I'm looking at a 1996 Volvo WIA. Its a relatively cheap truck. It has a Volvo engine in it, and an Eaton 10 speed. I was curious of what things I should look for as far as mechanical issues before I actually buy the truck.
The asking price is $3800. And me being a first time buyer and young guy, I have little experience looking at trucks and I would like any and all advice you guys and gals have to offer. Thank you!

It's a $3800 truck. Expect to replace everything. Not saying that's bad, but if a $3800 truck was worth much why would anyone spend $138,000?

You got a good point. For local work, more or less farm work, seeing as how it would be hauling hay for most of my ownership of it. Do you think it would be a decent investment, even if it did need some TLC?noluck Thanks this.

It's certainly cheap enough. I am not big on Volvo engines. There are not as many people who can work on them as say a more popular brand. But at 3800 it may be worth a gamble.Hickstick1985 Thanks this.

I guess we'll see what happens. Thanks for your advice!noluck Thanks this.

What's scrap going for these days. If it turns out to be a complete turd. You could probably part some of it out and scrap the rest and be pretty close to your initial $3800 investment. I have no experience doing this, just an idea

Worth paying a truck mechanic a little to look it over for you? Best money you will ever spend, IMO.

That's very true

It would be, but the only places close to me with a dyno and ECU reader are upwards of 50 miles from where the truck is sitting.
