Hey guys. So, I quit Millis - and the trucking industry itself - for good at the beginning of the month. It basically boils down to not really being healthy enough to continue driving a truck thanks to my Type 2 Diabetes and the lack of proper nutrition or exercise I found myself getting. Millis is an excellent company and I can't recommend them enough. I'll still try to answer questions for newbies as I always have, though my knowledge will become more outdated as time rolls on.

Looking into changing careers. I'm a retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant of twenty years. I've been in the automotive parts manufacturing business the going on the last years, but have been in manufacturing industry for the last 19-1/2 years since I retired from the Corps.
I currently live in central Alabama. Home base for Wiley Sanders Truck Lines. I worked for him for him for six years as a lab tech in his lead recycling business. I won't make that mistake twice.
The company I work for manufactures automobile parts for Hyundai. The automotive industry is in a slump. Things have been going South for awhile. And they're getting worse.
Three and four day weeks. More six and seven hours days, off ten days for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, possibly three!
Times are getting hard, and the money's getting tight. But I believe I come with a ways and means of prepaying and covering the bills while for about three months while I go through CDL training.
As I've stated, I currently live in Alabama. But the wife and I are planning to move to Mississippi within the next to twelve months, about fifteen miles off of I55 in around McComb, about an hour and a half south of Jackson, and about 20 miles from the Mississippi ~ Louisiana state line.
My first choice is Millis. Followed up by Prime. Haven't really came up with a,definitive 3rd choice.
My questions are as follows:
#1 Is Mississippi within Millis' hiring area?
#2. Is it. "Doable" for me to start out with Mills Transfer out of Alabama, and then move to Mississippi within the coming next six to twelve months?
Any opinions, advice, suggestions, or recommendations as to go about executing my plan of getting into trucking and moving from Alabama to Mississippi would be greatly appreciated.
A little background about me. I'm 60 and no I've no interest in retiring anytime soon. I'm in good health, without any medical issues.
My primary motivations for getting into trucking:
#1 Retively speaking? Job stability ~ if not a degree of job security.
#2 The propensity of not being necessarily tied down to any one geographical location in particular because of a particular plant or business
#3 The upside potential of earning an above average income compared to other options
#4 The various and numerous different types of driving jobs available in the industry
Thanks in advance -
2) If Mississippi is in the hiring area I do not see why a future move from AL to there would be an issue. That is one if the beauties of driving for a company that has a wide operating area. Relocating and still having a job with them. I would also ask that question too just to be safe.
Millis is a good company and they like prior military. Your training with them will be steeply discounted because if it. -
Thanks John. I like Millis for a lot of reasons.
1. They've been around for a long tine, 1930'
2. They seem to care about quality of life issues of their employees
3. They appear to operate newer equipment, and maintain it
4. I've really not found anything negative about them.
And on and on.
I'm not too much for job hopping around chasing the almighty dollar everytime the next guy over offers a few pennies more.
Being retired military I've already have a check, medical and dental covered etc.
Yet I'm not ready to be put out to pasture yet either. I plan on working in so long as I can. I've already had a taste of retirement life for about 1-1/2 years back seven years ago. Its not for me, not just yet. I've a couple of buddies of mine stil working . One's 79 and the other us 68. That'll probably be me. Perhaps not still driving though. I could see myself running the county lake one day.
Again Thanks for the heads up! -
Since you have medical coverage elsewhere they will pay you an extra .01 per mile not to take theirs. Not a lot but it adds up to an extra $1,000 a year or more depending on how many miles you drive per year. I looked at it as a mortgage payment or 2 car payments worth of extra money.
They do have good equipment and take care of it. The tractors are well equipped and not typical stripped down company trucks.Gunny376 Thanks this. -
Yup I think you'd be good from Mississippi or Alabama. And being ex millitary instead of the school costing $2500 it's discounted down to $1000.
Gunny376 Thanks this.
