Nope, I don't think there's any legal reasons for notification to the carrier. The owner of the container has a right to protect their property, no matter where that property is, sitting in a yard or rolling down the road. Tracking devices for containers, piggybacks, and leased trailers have been in use for a number of years, whether for logistics and/or anti-theft purposes. GE Leasing used to advertise it as a benefit to their customers.
