Im a little depressed. Went to Swift orientation and failed the driving test. Funny thing is, Swift is the company that I got my CDL with. Not gonna blame anyone but myself for a few reasons. I should have followed my first mind. All the students on the truck was shocked when I broke them the news, saying I did great, and I felt I did too. I havent been in a semi truck since 2008, and I should have refreshed, and gained more confidence before going. Just upset, cause my recruiter told me this road test was not a fail, since I had to go out with a trainer anyway. It was just to see if I could operate the truck safely, and maintain control, which I performed. No point of crying over spoiled milk, anyhow, after I do a refreshing course, Swift said I can come back, but im not. Any ideas or leads on companies that could accommodate someone like me? Driving record is good, just havent drove since 2008, but Im starting a refreshing course shortly.

I would do the refresher with Swift. If you already have your cdl, you don't need to go test out for your cdl again. Basically you'll back a trailer a few times, then you'll go shift gears a few days and be ready to go back.
If you failed the orientation driving test st Swift, you will fail it anywhere.driverdriver Thanks this. -
Apply with some other companies; it's surprising what companies will do to get a new driver onboard, especially someone that already has a cdl. They're bending their own hiring rules these days to get a good driver applicant. Many will give you an in house refresher.
Contract Freighters Inc. (www.cfidrive.com) in Joplin,MO
Titan Transfer in Shelbyville,TN
TransAm in Olathe,KS
May Trucking Company - hired a driver that had been off the road 10 years.
Abilene Motor Express in Richmond,VA hires drivers that have been off the road for years.
Freymiller - good chance they'll take you through their "Restore Program" which is on the website.
Western Express

I dont think I want to go back with Swift, and I dont plan on going to another orientation unless I get a week refresher. It was 2 students that went home, and funny thing is we all worked for Swift before. Ive drove coast to coast, with no incidents. I know how to drive, but still its been a while. SNI offered me a 19 days refresher, and im wishing I would have took it now, though that offer is still on the table. However, I dont have time to be running around to orientation across the country, while my bank account is suffering. I seriously drove that truck better than I thought I would after being out of one for 9 years. I did nothing unsafe, no curb jumping the trailer wheels, nothing major that would fail you on a CDL driving test. In fact, I did better on that test, than what I did on my real CDL test. Even more funny is, when I drove for Swift the first time, I tested to upgrade and get my own truck. This last test I did better than I did on that test back in 2008. LMAO, I dont want to say its the tester, because that doesnt mean nothing now, and nothing will change the outcome. I just need guidance cause obviously my comeback seems a little more challenging now.

Abilene trucks run 72 mph.
Titan trucks run 70 mph.
Anyway, I thing all those companies will hire you and have you on the road in a few days from now.
If you weren't an actual employee at Swift during the refresher, don't mention it. It would be the same as listing jobs you applied for, but were not hired.Last edited: Jul 29, 2017

You should go haul agriculture products for a season. grapes, tomatoes, etc. Those guys don't care about how you drive, and you will run so hard that your 4 months of dedication will be recognized as 1 year of experience.LoudOne Thanks this.

Unless you are 100% sure Swift does not report orientations I would give this such advice carefully. Even though you are not an employee most carriers do report orientations to DAC. Not all do, but enough that you should list on an application an orientation especially one you were sent home from because of a failed driving test! Remember the key word used by the OP was orientation not refresher.

Orientation is nothing more than an interveiw. No reason to report it. You are not hired by swift till the 3rd day anyways
