Hey! Im brand new here so I'm sorry for any dumb questions. Im currently employed and doing alright as a Chief Engineer on a large oil platform supply vessel that runs out of south Louisiana. I have wanted to drive truck ever since i was a kid but have stuck with this oil field line of work for 18 years. When the market crashed almost 3 years ago thousands of people on the gulf coast lost their jobs. I have been one of the very fortunate few that have managed to keep their job but recently i got the news that the oil companey that leases the boat i work on might drop the contract and lay my boat off. With the way things are going
in the oil field i think its time for me to take a break and to start pursuing my truck driving career. I don't know much about this industry so I'm sure these questions have been answered before. I guess my first question would be: Is there any companies that hire new CDL graduates from Alabama? I think I'm going to pay for my own CDL school out of pocket but i will still need plenty of OTR training. I have a list of about 10 different companies I'm going to call but i figured i would try this before i waste anyone's time. Thank you for any advice.

Here's some tanker companies that hire new graduates:
    Superior-Carriers
    Tidewater Transit
    Schneider Bulk
    Trimac Transportation
    SVTN
    CTL Transportation
    McKenzie Tank Lines
Some websites may show "experience required" but that's incorrect. They all hire new grads, but some are strict about which new grads they hire.

Which city are you near in Alabama?

All those I listed in Post #2 are tanker companies. Here some other types of trucking and they hire new graduates:
Freymiller - refrigerated coast to coast trucking. Hires new cdl grads and trains them through their "Restore Program" which is on the website.

Danny Herman Trucking - dry van coast to coast trucking. Freight lanes usually stay below I-40 and don't run Northeast. Lots of Southern California runs.

Abilene Motor Express - coast to coast dry van and refrigerated trucking. 72 mph trucks.
Navajo Express - coast to coast refrigerated trucking.

Mckenzie Tank Lines is in Mobile and one of their trainers lives there.
SVTN is in Saraland. They used to pay percentage, but that didn't work out as well for the drivers, so I believe they're back on mileage pay now plus accessorial pays, which all tanker companies have.
Most of the tanker companies listed have terminals somewhere in Alabama or near, so you're probably in the hiring area for all of them.

Awesome! California runs would be perfect because I'm planning on moving there at some point. I would love to make as many western runs as possible. I've driven I 10 east and west and I 5 north and south so many times I pretty much know it like the back of my hand.

Thanks the reason I asked that is because the more I look at companies the more I find they only hire out of certain areas due to the fact they would not be able to get you home. I'm honestly not looking for much home time as I'm looking to drive as much as I'm allowed to gain experience. I have worked offshore for years and I've learned to accept the fact that I won't be home very much.

Freymiller, Danny Herman, Navajo are good if you want to see California often.
Freymiller has runs there pretty often.
Danny Herman has a couple of facilities in Southern California; one is a terminal in Calexico,CA.
Navajo has something in Chino,CA which could be just a drop yard, but it shows they go there often.
I was born & raised near Nashville,TN but got stressed out with the snow and ice in the winter and overall just needed a change, so moved to Nevada.

Off chance do you know a guy in Mobile named Ronald Burkett? Old Navy buddy of mine from years ago. Don't know if he went back to Mobile or not; he liked it there so may have.
