I run outbound and inbound from TN because I live here and like to go home weekly at the very least. Sometimes it's good and easy sometimes it's bad and difficult. Whatever I book is what I made of it. I would suggest you learn lanes around your home 20. If your home 20 is a deadhole like Florida or Denver then you have learn how to work around that. Or move to an area with a better freight balance both inbound and outbound.

Right, and that's what I'm trying to do that is figure out the freight lanes in my area because like you I do not want to be too far away from home. Im in the Waco area which is around 80 miles south of dfw and 80 or so miles north of Austin and 200 so miles from Houston so from what I can tell so far its not the best location but definitely not the worst.rollin coal Thanks this.

You should be able to work that area and do alright.

I'm working out of Austin and not much out of here. I usually hit Dallas or Houston to get back to Austin. Between Dallas Houston and San Antonio it's not hard to have a good week short Haul . Freight is shifting around just follow it .

@rollin coal @joseph1853 @danny23tx do you guys use the load board or just wait for calls from agents?
-
I'm mainly on the load boards . Brokers do contact me but it's rarely what I'm looking for .
-
whats a good rate for short haul in your area and how many miles?
-
That's different from person to person, but I think it's stupid for ANYONE, I don't care if your truck is paid off or not, to take anything for less than $800-900. Unless you have contacts where you can get gauranteed 2 runs per day within HOS for at least $500 per load.

I use DAT, CHRW and the Coyote rep for our company. I post up a lot and take calls. Most, but not all, of my freight comes from posting up. Sometimes I look at what's out there and call. It just depends. I don't really have a set routine other than to get a good rate leaving out and get the best I can coming back. Sometimes I can do really good coming back also. Sometimes I triangle back. I used to run a lot of local and if it's there I will even now, just haven't seen it in a while or should say have been doing better with other runs. Everything always depends on circumstances.
