I am looking to get a new to me 2012 Benson all aluminum 48x102 flat. I would like information from those in the know about what to look for in them.

Check along the rub rails on both sides for broken welds between the rail and the pockets / spools. The rails don't take much to bend and they don't weld all the way around on the spools where the rail connects. When the rail gets bent it can rip the welds holding it to the spools and pockets.

Check the marker light connections on the sides. If it uses the little bullet plugs they have a habit of corroding. A bit of dielectric grease in them helps stop it.

Pretty stout trailers otherwise. I've had up to 60K on mine and that's the only time I've been able to get the entire arch out of the deck. Hauling standard 40-45K loads and it still has a good bit of arch to it.

Check your suspension. If it's a spread axle, that rear axle hopefully is treated with TLC by the previous owner with a air dump switch in tractor for purpose of raising rear axle for U turning and docking etc. If you are going to have a problem it will be back there.

Eyeball the entire frames where they meet the underside of the decking. The welds must be in good shape. The previous poster beat me to the arching. The arch is there for that reason so you can bridge super coils.

Whatever you do with any aluminum flatbed. DO NOT EVER exceed whatever it's 20 foot bridge rating in the middle. It will fail you. My Ravens was rated for 54000 in the middle back in the day, Ive had 52000 on 20 feet and change twice. Took the arch right out of that deck.

Thanks for the heads up! I have bought trucks and know what to look for, but never a trailer. I am hoping to check it out this week or next. I will update if time permits.

Bean Jr. and Shock Therapy Thank this.
