Hello folx, my trailer says cargo max on deck is 16,300lbs. Is this the max I can legally (going thru the scales) put on it? I thought the tongue took a percentage of the weight? If so how does it work?

    It's a dual 12k.
    25,900 gvwr trailer weighs 9600.

    Thanks

Contact the manufacturer or dealer where you purchased this trailer. See what they tell you.

If this is a 40' deck over, and you're pulling it with a one ton dually you really don't want to load much more weight than that anyways. I know there's a lot of Hotshots out there pulling 20k to 24k in freight weight but They're just killing their trucks.

It's a load max, they said 25% to the truck. Just seemed high. Agreed @ 1ton. Im Pulling with a MDT. So up to 20k not a prob. Thanks for the feedback, fbc. You're one of the only ones around here with actual answers.

Also would I be written up by dot for hauling more than it says on the sticker?

You're welcome. It would depend on what the other sticker on your trailer shows for gvw?

    MDT?

    Trailer gvw 25,900

Mdt, medium duty truck. Class 6.

Reason I ask is bc i have an oppurtunity to pull a few loads weighing 20k at 3.88 per mile. The truck can pull it fine but not sure if dot would allow on the trailer.... as its 25,900 gvw and weighs 9600lbs.

No one in here can speak on this except FBC? A forum full of professional truckers, no one?

I am searching everywhere but the info is so variable. I just want to know if dot just goes by the sticker or if they consider tongue transfer into the equation.

    Thanks

That sticker appears to refer to the tires, not the trailer. Do you still have the original tires on it? What is the weight rating on the tire sidewall? DOT will check that, as well as axle ratings, to determine total payload.

Tires are upgraded to goodyear rated at 3,750 each... so 30,000lbs.

But I just don't get how I can load more legally if the gvwr sticker is 25,900 (2 12k axles) and the curb weight is 9,600 leaving 16,300 of payload.

If you went by tires I could load 20,400lbs. DOT would allow this even though trailer says gvwr 25,900?

I just don't see how trailer can hold more than 16300 if the weight is 9600 with 12k axles.

    I'm a newb.

    Thanks for your help.

You can't do it "legally". You might get away with it for a while. DOT will check axle rating, sooner or later, but you are overloading it and asking for trouble. At the scales, if your tires are leaning, or officer becomes suspicious, they will check. If you break it on road, you're looking at serious fines. Either add an axle, replace the 2 axles with heavier axles, or get another trailer.
Your axles are designed for 12k each, bearings and brakes will handle that much, and a bit more, for a while.

Also, with your MDT, you probably should have a heavier duty trailer, which will allow you to handle more of those heavier loads safely.
