Hey everyone, hope all is well with you guys and gals. Got a question. What make of trucks does TA run? Just curious as I am considering applying with them after being laid off at my job a few weeks ago. I have my CDL-A so I guess I will be going through a refresher course and then with a trainer for 30 days huh? Looking forward to it.You all sound like a great bunch and I hope to run into you someday. Not literally of course. LOL. Take care and drive safe.

We have all Freightliners, upto this year they are Columbia's some mid roofs but not many mostly condos, 455hp Detroit 10spd. this year we are getting some cascadias. Pretty stripped down, not many bells and wistles. And you will be out 21 days of driving with a trainer, some stay out all 21 days, mine went home 2 weekends so I was out a total of about 24 days. I was same as you had cdl but no experience so worked out great cause you are paid from day one of orientation, not much but its something.

Thanks for your reply. Now, the biggy....does TA require you to go into NYC and Long Island and if you refuse these loads, does it hurt your chance of getting more miles?
Are you labeled a big baby because of it? My younger brother is an o/o and he went into NYC a couple times and swore he would never do it again. Is it as bad as all that?
-
Hello All!! Brand new CDL-A Here!! Was going to go with Werner but haven't heard too much good in the forums about them. Heard a lot of good about TA.
Need those six days of training before I get on the road. CDL examiners treat you like you've been driving for a year or more. Only had 16 hours on the road in school.

LOL, a big baby? Maybe behind the scenes, but they won't call him that in his face or in his ear. There are a lot of drivers that won't go there, even though they do offer a little monetary incentive to hit the boroughs and NYC.
Hubby says it's just not worth it (for the headache and the additional cost for fuel and everything), so he refuses anything going even close to it. He's trying to get them to not send him East at all, but I keep telling him he needs to buy his FM a big map and mark w/ X's the states he doesn't want to go to... cause the FM seemed oblivious to it for a long while. The FM is doing better now, though, and hubby's getting decent miles, even without going to NJ, NY, MA, etc.
He wouldn't for the longest time refuse anything, but he's learned to let the company boys deal with it. HA HA... He's got a big Volvo 770, and that's not a city type of truck to drive, so he avoids going into NYC at all, or any other places where the big kids just can't fit without a can opener.
Good luck! -
Good luck w/ orientation and hitting the road! I don't know how the trainers are, but hopefully they'll get you some decent experience before they turn you loose on your own. -
NYC is just another city. I mean many drivers go through Chicago and sit in the 294 construction traffic, drive through DC and get caught on the beltway, go to Atlanta and get caught on I-20 for an hour or two just to go 20 miles. NYC is another city pain in the butt, however it is a city pain in the butt that pays an extra $100. Even if it takes you 4 hrs longer to deliver that's still $25/hr of compensation.
I can't really comment on any retaliation if you refuse. I've never refused a load in my career that I could do legally. What seems to be your basis for apprehension? Cause your brother didn't like it? Are you not confident in your own skills as a driver?
Run any NYC load they give you, be patient, careful and safe and take that extra 100 and get dinner and an asian massage afterwords. -
am basically a new driver looking at transport america and maverick.maveric says they can't get me in until probably 1st of the year, and waiting to here from ta.werner wants me to come now as does crst, anybody without an axe to grind have any info on these companies?
-
i have been told from maverick the first of the year too hauling glass, but from what i have been told on here theyre the lowest of the low, werner has also contacted me...im quickly learning that the ones contacting nebies have a high trurnover rat but what are we to do with no experience?
-
well dont apply at transport america, i called and was told i was rejected. I guess 1 accident in the last 5 years and no criminal record no tickets in the last 5 years and highest grade in the class is not a good person to hire. then i ask for a reason and they told me they want me to send them a letter via us mail just to find out the reason which could take up to 2 weeks! what a ###### up company. pretty sad when a company wont even tell you why your rejected over the phone so that you can dispute it
