So I applied to Freymiller and all that and got accepted to orientation. Wait , it gets better.
Well as soon as they send me the Orientation invite/agreement , my phone rings. It's the Owner, Don Freymiller. Tells me he's very happy I am coming to orientation and can't wait to meet me. Tells me to be sure and stop by his office anytime I want.
How cool is that?
Maybe more common than I think but first time ever I have had the owner call me and welcome me. Seems like a nice touch.

He's a good guy and has an open door policy for all employees. That's not common at all, but he keeps his company driver friendly. If I went back to refrigerated trucking it would be with Freymiller.

I agree with @Chinatown i don't think that's common at all. That's a class act. Good for them for being approachable and inviting and good for you for landing the job. Best of luck to you over there I hear a lot of good things.

I thought Don turned operations over to his kid sometime back (but I could be wrong) Maybe he's got nothing to do now except call new hires and welcome them aboard ! !

I've worked for a few companies that rave about their "open door policy"...that has dispatch and executives behind a locked door, drivers unable to enter without the person they want to talk to coming to get them from the driver's lounge. Doesn't exactly seem "open door" to me.
Where I'm at now, I can walk into the office and approach the desk of anyone at the company to have a conversation...dispatch, safety, payroll, even the CEO and COO. In orientation, they handed out a card with all of the necessary phone numbers. Office numbers for everybody. Cell phone and home phone numbers for people you might need to contact "after-hours"....dispatch, safety, as well as the CEO and COO. Now THAT is "open door".
Always good to hear other companies taking the ACTUAL "open door" approach, treating their drivers as respected members of the team, rather than the more common "open door in name only" which relegates the driver to a status lacking respect and undeserving of access to the office staff. -

I worked for a smaller sized fleet of about 150 trucks. I remember how I felt when the owner called me and essentially said the same thing, but added, "we'd love you to come and be part of our family."
But alas, he hired a business "coach" who told him he needed to stay up at the 30,000 foot level and should have all the lower level management at the 5,000 foot level deal with such things.
One of the worst pieces of advice he could've of ever heeded, and I told him so too.
