Am I out of my mind for wanting to do this ?

    Well after the 6 months of barn door pigeon calling he'll be sure to of found something, where as he could have 6 month experience by then had he of went the other route.

    Is that they way you go about every other big decision in life? Just pick any woman for your wife because it's taking too long to find the right one? Just buy any house because you are unable to find the right house immediately?

    No, but you can sell yourself better with a bit of leg to stand on with some experience versus none.

    Yes also. Why anyone retired, or leaving a decent job would want to get into trucking is beyond me. Only reason I could think of is you and the old lady can't get along and divorce is not an option. Be prepared to be belittled and treated like a degenerate by everyone you run into including shippers, receivers, and the general public, and worst of all other steering wheel holders. Hope this helps.

    I appreciate all the responses. Wish I had time to reply to each one individually.

    My wife won't have the first problem with me being gone. Remember, she married a guy who used to get "haze gray and underway" all the time. The last warship I was assigned to was a Perry class FFG. That's supposed to stand for "Fast Frigate Guided Missile type", but FFG sailors know it really stands for "Forever Fricken Gone". Four and a half years on that tin can and we averaged about 9 and half months every year on the waves.

    She was always much better than the average navy wife at holding down the homefront. When I met her in San Diego, she had left her home in Anchorage with nothing more than $500 dollars in her pocket and a determination to live someplace where it didn't snow. She's pretty resourceful, level headed and an incredibly good money manager. I watched so many other guys sweating how their bills and home life were going to get manged while on cruise and I never even gave those sort of issues the first thought. She made it easy for me to have a remote job.

    She has no desire to ever drive, but we have talked about the possiblity of O/O some years down the road and if so, she would manage me.

    I keep thinking TMC for 3 reasons :

    1. Solid training - I'm as green as green gets. I think I could benefit from learning correct methods from the start.

    2. Competitive Pay - Maybe not the most competitive, but I'll be entry level so......

    3. Location - I live within the city limits of Columbia. Other than my own pickup, there's no parking a truck at my residence. ......But I am local to one of TMC's terminals.


    Then there's those trucks they have as well. I drove through their yard a few Sundays ago. Must have been 35 or more Petes all neatly lined up and all of them looked pretty sharp. Every one of them looked like they'd just been washed too. My understanding is all their trucks have wood grain paneling, leather interior, APU's, and a 22" TV.

    Through the internet, I can get a feel for the miles / pay line haul guys at TMC typically experience. I also understand the majority of their loads deliver in a day. Could this mean TMC is a big enough carrier to be regional in most every region of the U.S. ? The question I'm getting at is, could they be limited in the long haul stuff, already having every region covered ?
