Is anyone else getting tired of being told by corporate almost weekly how expensive we are and that they need to cut more cost? I'm happy Bentonville is impressed with the lowball bids they received from contract carriers. That should make all of us feel good.

Here's a warning to the lurkers, don't give up a good job for this place. Walmart right now doesn't sound like they know if they want a private fleet or if they should be paying us the big 46-49 cpm that's costing them so much.

As the messages from Bentonville seem to get more negative each week, my attitude and happiness of working here get bad as well. This place is making sure our morale is in the crapper just like the associates you see at the stores.

Seems like sending a message back complaining of how expensive CORPORATE is would be appropriate.

Seriously, Walmart of all companies thinking cutting their wages would do them well. Cutting out their C-suites Christmas bonus would likely make a larger impact and distress no one.

The secret to the success the Private Fleet has enjoyed for many years comes down to one simple phrase. "You cannot work a happy man to death!". While I was a driver for the Private Fleet, it was so easy to always be motivated to do the best job possible. It really meant something to be a Walmart driver. I was proud to represent the Private Fleet out on the road and before the general public in the most positive way each and every day.

Should the powers that be decide to try and fix something that is not broken within the Private Fleet, the end result will not only cost more money, regardless of what some bean counter will claim the company saved, it will further diminish the image of the company as a whole. You cannot expect to take a fleet of hard working professional drivers with high moral and start treating them with disrespect and micromanage them and expect the same positive results!

I pray for the well being of the Private Fleet drivers. While I am no longer a Private Fleet driver after retiring in June due to a degenerative joint disease in my left shoulder that multiple surgeries has not solved thus far, I will always pray for the safety and well being of my fellow drivers. I really hope that common sense will prevail and the Private Fleet will continue to be treated as the true asset it is just as Sam Walton wanted.

I would think a private fleet cost more to run or the same as outside carrier. The big difference I bet is insurance and who pay the accident claims. That Walmart accident in NJ put Walmart on the hook since it was their truck. If it was a contract carrier they would have been on hook and not Walmart the company. It doesn't look like Walmart is ever expanding their fleet. When ever they open a new grocery DC they always seem to go with contract carriers to cover the whole trucking side for them.

Sam Walton may have cared about driver and stuff, but today I bet Walmart only cares about the bottom line. Them Walmart driver are getting better pay then most.

I think the glory days of Walmart stores are over. They lost the online game and they are losing the store game. Pretty much everyone I know does not shop at Walmart anymore. The main reason is stupid, underpaid, unmotivated associates.
If Walmart will try to save money on truckers, their private fleet will also go down the toilet.
Outsourcing does seem like a very possible option

    Preaching the TRUTH!

This doesn't just apply to private fleets, though; I think this is true of ANY outfit. Personally, I think that the problem is that too many fleets are, in reality, being run by bean-counters. Home time, better equipment, it doesn't matter - those bean counters won't get on board with ANYTHING unless you can somehow show them how it relates to the company's bottom line. Even smaller fleets are guilty as sin of this type of thinking.
