Can you and your wife run for $1.50 per mile? What are your operating costs going to be with a brand new truck? I dont think i could operate a $180,000 truck for $1.50. (although im sure many do) OOIDA and many other sites have a calculator for figuring your operating costs, those costs may shock you when you total your fixed and variable cost into the per mile. And dont forgett drivers wage in that figureSavageSam Thanks this.

I have a seen a few of them that do keep them on their tractors. I know for sure i saw one couple that had some sort of small boom with a craddle of some kind they could swing it off with, the other one i saw was a ramp setup with a small winch deal to pull it up on the ramp to the cat walk.
They were seriously making the most of their experience lol. Looked like fun.luckystar Thanks this. -
I agree. Find something with higher rate per mile, but less miles= less wear and tear on truck, less hours working and more time enjoying life.
I know those oversize jet engines from Ohio Washington state pays good. Wouldn't need a team to do it, but because of the rate....youd make just as much money for time spent,

Great idea on teaming together with your wife. I think that sounds fun! The only thing I question is your math of available hours for driving. The max you can drive is 11 per day for a total of 14 on-duty hours. Unless I misunderstood you original post about hours. However I still think it is great you and your wife are taking on this new adventure! Good Luck!

Thanks for ALL the replies. As for the driving hours, we were planning on each of us driving 8 hours or 16 hours a day. As for the rate per mile, I'm using $1.50/mile because I'm talking about EVERY mile I put on the trucks odometer. Loaded or empty. I figure that truck needs $1.50/mile. Period. I used $1.50/mile because I didn't want people to think I was using "Pie in the sky" rates. I know sometimes you can get a REALLY good rate going INTO somewhere you'll play hell getting OUT of. You might have to D.H. or take a crap rate just to cover fuel/wear-tear etc. just to get back into a lane. As far as the house goes, we have options. I could rent it to my kids and still have a physical address. Or, I can use the tax preparer/bookkeepers address.snowman_w900 Thanks this.

Sounds like you've done alot of homework for sure.
Wish you luck on the new adventure! Let us know how your journey goes.SavageSam Thanks this. -
Thanks. I'm still studying/learning. The more I learn, the more I realize there's a SH*Tton I don't know. I'm lucky for the fact that I have a really good job making good money now so I won't be rushed into making a hasty decision. In the meantime, saving $$$, saving $$$, saving $$$.snowman_w900 Thanks this.

I'd suggest driving until 2000 and waking up at 0400. It's much easier to find parking spots with that schedule. We used to run this way, and it was great for getting rest and being able to help each other out while moving. The flexibility in being able to start earlier or drive later was a bonus as well.
Before you buy the truck, make sure you've got the work lined up. Make sure you have backup plans in case things don't work out.Otr Traveler and SavageSam Thank this. -
With that setup, just about any company would love to have you.
If you do go "homeless", make sure you have a "permanent address", somewhere. Without a permanent address, you can't claim per diem on your taxes, which would cost you about $110 per day in net deduction for a team.SavageSam Thanks this.
