get the popcorn because yes I'm a newby haha. We are doing loads from LA to Vegas load weight is between 45-49k on a 48' flatbed. A lot of hills on the way. We currently are using a 08 Volvo d13 with a eaton automatic. Truck feels very sluggish and when it shifts with that much weight it shifts hard as ####. So we are looking at a 2014 cascadia mid roof 48" sleeper 232" wheelbase with a cummins isx15 450hp and a 10 speed with 3.42 gears. How do the specs sound for this kind of work? Thank you for any advice we can get

I'd step up to at least a 13 speed. Don't bother with the Eaton autos. If it has to be an auto get the Allison.
-
What MPG are you getting with the Volvo?
-
Sounds like a sideways step at best. You're driving a clown car now and want to shift over to driving a clown car with a 10 speed. Spec the truck properly for the intended use.

Ok that was harsh maybe.
3.70 or 3.90 gears. 13 speed. Motor isn't too important long as it's not a Volvo or a paccar. 22.5 3.70 should be ok 24.5 3.90s
Learn to drive it and learn to row gears. -
And 500 hp minimum. Lots of hills between long beach and Vegas. A better performing truck is easier on the driver, pulls world's better and will average the same or better fuel economy on trucks that are grossed out all the time.Dye Guardian, DDlighttruck and Razororange Thank this.

Just remember it's a truck not a car. Hills are gonna be work for any setup.

Thank u guys for the valuable info, now I know what to look for as far as tranny and gears. For wheelbase is there a certain size I need to be around ?
-
Not really. With the shorter bunk you can get away with a bit shorter wheelbase. Just make sure you have enough swing clearance for what you are hauling. If you want to run a rack you might need a bit more.
With the smaller sleeper and a set back axle you could easily run a 230-240" wheel base.DDlighttruck Thanks this. -
244"-300"
If you ever want to permit OSOW the rear axle spacing is important. If you don't care then a tight 50" is fine.Razororange Thanks this.
