These Mega carriers must make a fortune having there lease drivers operate by the mile with no minimum per day revenue on short loads. Even if he gives his time away for free he is still loosing, fixed cost continue to pile up.

I'd say you got a good deal on that. I have a $850 minimum, and I don't care if it only goes across the street I still charge that.

You asked for all of this. You closed your eyes and
Looked the other way on all the information available
About leasing a truck from a mega.

We get 4 or 5 of these same threads every week on TTR.
Everybody thinks their smarter than the multi million
Dollar mega, with their multi million dollar lawyers
Who covered every angle on the contract.
    You've got no leverage whatsoever.
You need them, they don't need you.

That's a whole lotta of explaining. You shouldn't need to spill your facts out to a guy who's job is to push drivers to do loads. You need to figure out a better angle to get what you want. Try familiarizing yourself with the freight your company runs and putting attention to how it moves. Try and contact a planner if you can and get direct numbers to people who can help you. You will need to do favors at times but the objective is not to become a driver without leverage.

FYI, I've never been an o/o but that's what I would do and if I couldn't get some sort of control, I'd quit and find a place where I could.

Problem is, when people get themselves into these cut rate no good mileage contracts, there's not enough money to be doing any favors. He can do them, but what can they offer him in return? A longer load with a deplorable rate, that's all. He'll never be tossed a bone back, so why give one to them?

If I was the OP, I would take all the advice here as constructive criticism, not as bashing, because that's not what it is. Take his truck and get as far from Werner or any other low life carrier that pays on mileage and get that truck to work with a company that pays on percentage. There will never be a profitable future on a $1 plus FSC deal. Period.

It's not an L/P through Werner anymore. I bought the truck from Fleet Truck Sales, Inc that sells retired Werner trucks. I'm a contractor with an LLC. Of course I got the LLC solely for the purpose of getting benefits that TrueNorth offers to Werner contractors. I will be calling my salesman Monday morning to see if I have the ability to take the truck somewhere else, I should be able to since it's not a lease purchase but we all know Megas have their ways of hiding in fine print. There are a few things I chose Werner for, since I had been a company driver for them for a while, it was "easy" to get started as an owner operator with them.

I'm gonna contact my salesman and see what kind of restraints they slipped past me in the fine print. I'm not taking any of this as bashing. I asked a bunch of truckers on a forum lol, I knew what kind of responses I was gonna get. They're all right of course, I'm getting paid #### to do the same #### others get paid 3x more for. The thing is that I have the ability, if I fail as an o/o, to go back to company driver with no penalty. It gives me a chance to understand the expenses, maintenance, loads, and all that without necessarily throwing myself off a cliff.

So just for an update, I did my 34 hour reset to let everyone involved in my attempt at a "No" and it seems all is well. I said I'd be ready for a load at 3:45pm and he assigned me a load at 2:00pm that goes from Laredo, TX to Brownstown, MI (1583 miles) so I'm going to assume that they're not as pissed as they had seemed. I learned a lot more from this question than I expected and I'm going to take everyone's advice. First thing Monday morning (my salesman has Friday through Sunday off) and see what kind of chains they have on me and "my" truck. I had a little bit of knowledge of what I was getting involved with by going o/o through Werner and I had my reasons. Knowing what kind of expenses and bookkeeping and things like that I have to know after a month of being an "owner operator", I think I could take the truck somewhere else and be confident that I'm not going to end up homeless. After 4 weeks of driving for Werner however, I have been making more than as a company driver but of course my truck is not a bucket of bolts and hasn't had any major issues short of airlines being crap and all the turbo tubes being loose but I'm not idiot when it comes to diesel engines and what not so I was able to fix all of it myself. So I guess I can post an update Monday on what my salesman says. In the meantime, everyone is saying all this and that about making some serious money, any companies you guys would suggest to lease to? I'm only 22 until October and Landstar wants me to be 23...insurance purposes I'm sure, so I'd like to run with them since they use load boards and are 100% owner operators. Any suggestions?

You are losing time driver and time is money. Actually it's more valuable than money.
But then again I probably lose time to being a company driver.
Edit: Never mind, you only 22 and still have time.

You guys remind me of my wife and I. The sacrifice will never stop by the way! Might aswell get used to it.

I thought you were running your own brokerage completely on your own. Was just saying you could get an operating authority and sign on owner ops if you wanted. Just based off you having freight and the mind for business. All it takes equipment wise then is trailers which even can be rented. Reefers however are probably 3 times more then a dry van to rent so could make it a bit tougher. Goal here is to utilize your freight to keep owner ops on good pay, then with time make enough that by then you know your comfortable and understand the asset side, then get your own trucks.

And FYI it's not hard to be ahead of your peers. Haha! Millennials are hit and miss. Some great hardworking minds out there and a lot of lazy live in moms basement too. lol
