I had an owner operator for UPS last night and ask about my company and he told me he was getting $1.20/mile pulling for UPS driving 7000 miles a week with his wife and killing his truck. I thought UPS was supposed to be a good company. Is $1.20 per mile high or low for leased owner ops? I can't imagine they're making any more than company drivers after taking out the truck expenses so why would anybody do this? Wouldn't this guy make a ton more getting his own numbers and just hauling freight off of load boards?
UPS O/O getting $1.20/mile

Because he was an owner op leasing from a contractor, that's why. Did you ask him if the 1.20 was after all expenses or without.
-
It was before expenses but he did say he got a UPS discount on fuel.

Low.TruckRunner, KB3MMX, rabbiporkchop and 1 other person Thank this.

Lets hit this a bit more. UPS does pay well to the person to the original contract holder. Which may be a l fleet owner OR not even have any trucks. Who then subs the freight the freight out under his control to others that only hear UPS.
Thus the guy you talked to.Brettj3876, rabbiporkchop, Lepton1 and 2 others Thank this. -
I think people dont figure there wages or replacement cost into these figures. Subtract what a good team would make then fuel then maintenance and replacement cost and things start looking real weak. If you were to subtract your TSMT wages from that you would need to take a pay cut to run for that.ladr and Midnightrider909 Thank this.

That is what I told him.luckystar Thanks this.

For a lease operation, 1.20 flat rate sucks...
Nolelover61, Brettj3876, rabbiporkchop and 2 others Thank this. -
They shouldn't allow sub-leasing at all, this is where people get screwed.

Got an offer from Coyote Logistics, who is owned by UPS, to run peak time freight for them (UPS), power only. $750 a day to the truck. I said, "no thanks."
Nolelover61, Rideandrepair, KB3MMX and 3 others Thank this.
