Here's what I need in a GPS. Any recommendations?

It's called a Trucker's Atlas. All truck stops sell them. Get the laminated one. Runs about $30. Then call the shipper and receiver for directions and a cb for traffic. All that is cheaper than a gps.

I drove over 500,000 miles doing that before I went local.

 

I am not afraid of technology dude. I am into computers a lot, but look up on youtube and accidents on here where the driver "followed" his gps and ended up in a park or distroying a 100 year old bridge.

Also, I used google maps when planning my route.

GPS is fine, if you also look at a map and call for directions. You have to have a brain. My gps would always lead me down the wrong highway through Knoxville and if I hadn't used my brain I would have gone in the wrong direction.

Always call for directions cause I have seen drivers get lost in a town because they didn't go the right way and followed gps. They would go to the wrong gate and couldn't turn around or what not.

If you use gps, don't just rely on it. Use the Atlas too. If you do get a gps get a Rand McNally cause you can snyc it wth the Atlas.

I have a Rand McNally, but the model I have requires a computer to update & download new maps. They have some models that doesn't require a computer, though. It's the only brand I've used, I'd give it about a 7 out of 10. I use it in conjunction with an app on my phone called Waze. Waze (owned by Google) always has updated maps/detours/traffic jams, etc, but it doesn't know you're in a truck so, be careful. But, that's true of any device - just use common sense.

 

I use a Garmin Dezl 570. It works pretty good. It makes boo boo's sometimes, but they all do. Also use Google Maps on my phone. Never had an Atlas and probly never will.
My old boss used nothing but Google maps and got by fine.

I just got a Garmin Dezl 770 for this reason. You want something that has "live traffic" updates of the HD Digital Traffic variety . I haven't had a chance to road test it yet, so not too sure about the construction zones. It connects to your smart phone for extra info such as parking space availability and traffic cam views. I got mine as a refurbished unit for about 100 bucks less than brand new. Good luck.
