The engine will run without the lift pump, but you have to crank it like crazy to get it started, mine leaked when it failed.

Must depend on the engine, one of mine will, albeit will sputter if pulling hard[ that's the one that tried to burn itself up], other one died and wouldn't start till lift pump was replaced.

This pump is only 8 months old "the one I took off". The old orginal red pump started leaking last June 2011. I really do not think the ISX is a bad engine have many freinds with the accert cat that have many more issues and cost far more to repair. They are getting 5.8 MPG. My ISX will out pull them and still get 6.5 mpg with 80000lbs 7.5mpg light load all day. I'm very happy with this engine never used a drop oil between 20000 oil changes. Oh well thanks again for your help.

I have a ISX15 CM871 in a 2010 Prostar, the pump hasn't worked in probably 8 months. The engine starts right up every single time. After an oil change and fuel filter change it takes about 10 seconds with no manual priming and has only sputtered one time after a fuel filter change. Interesting how the same engine in a different truck can have a hard time and the other has no problem without an operable pump.

Original first release ISX engines didn't come with a primer pump at all and were added by recall kits. The main pump is ok to draw fuel, but just causes an "extended" crank in most cases and very rare to cause a no start. They aren't critically needed, they are mostly to help start the engine a bit quicker.

Take the fuel filter off and key on. If it works, fuel will run out.
