Hey guys I am a new driver and get out of school in about 3 weeks. I have seen a bunch of recruiters and talked to a bunch of people and I am starting to get really overwhelmed and not sure that I am getting told strait buy anyone. All I am hearing lately is bad stories about not making enough money and never getting home and I have another little hitch cause I don't drive on Saturday for religious reasons. I really need a job as I haven't worked in 3 months and the bills are piling up and I have about 10 apps. in and I am hired at them all. My record is clean and I am a pretty good driver for a beginner, so getting hired won't be a problem. Any advice on companies to look at, things to stay away from?

If you find one that will let you off every Saturday - you'll be lucky. Most want to get you out and keep you out. Good luck though. I hope things work out.

I don't mind being out as long as I can shut down. I just talked with a recruiter from H.O.W today and doing regional I would only have to stay out 5 days in theory so
I could get home every weekend.

Sometimes those 5 days could very well be saturday and sunday. The trucking biz tends to be anything but predictable. Good luck to you i wish you the best out there.

Ya I think your gonna have to come to an understanding with your higher power if your gonna be OTR. I have trouble making a Sun Church service and most TA's have those around nine or so on sun morn. Good Luck though. I hope you find what you want.

^Ditto, unless your particular higher power will pay your bills for you then you may have stumbled onto a problem. I don't know of any OTR gigs where you can get off for a day because of a religion.

Although they may have good intentions of you not working Saturday you have to anticipate delays like breakdowns and bad weather that will have you driving longer than expected .

Yeah I realize all that. I already told my wife that if I get hung out once in a while on Saturday I will just give all that to the church. I am hoping that I can just get shut down. I have family and friends almost everywhere so always find a friendly place. Hopefully it won't be a problem but we'll see.

You seem to have the right attitude about it....willing to accept that if it's going to happen, you will make the best of it. Most companies (especially those that are willing to take newbies like you and I) are not prepared to alter their schedules to accomodate our needs. They will TRY to give you that time off, as long as it doesn't interfere too much with their current plans.
As for the rest of the info you are getting from all the recruiters, take it all with a grain of salt. Recruiters get paid to SELL you on working for their client, so they will paint as rosy a picture as they can. If it sounds too good to be true, then it is. But don't dwell too much on the negatives that you hear from some of the guys here either. As an example, Schneiders has been rated as a GREAT company by some here, and as a TERRIBLE company by others...the truth is somewhere in between.

Anyway, good luck, and let us know how it works out.
