    Seat belts save lives.

They saved my life and that of my infant daughter's twice.

I live in New York state. There has been a law on the books for a few years mandating seatbelt use for all vehicles. This includes cars and rigs. The fine for not wearing one is small, maybe fifty dollars.I am not sure if any points are charged against your license.I am not sure if all states have a seatbelt law.I am pretty sure most do.The reason?Federal funds. The federal goverment decided to withhold millions of dollars in transportation funds to any state that did not inact a seatbelt law.You may look at states DMV website's and it will list what their regulations are.I am not going to preach, but I do think seatbelts save lives. There have been many young people in my area that have died because they were ejected from their vehicle during an accident. In regards to others post's about helmet laws. Not all states require a helmet.I don't like to wear one,but it's proably a good idea.In 1977 I met up with a large oak tree.My front wheel and forks met first, then my head.I was wearing a helmet. It did save my life.Broken bones? Yes.Live to see another day?Yes.

The seat belt law in a semi is a federal law I believe.

The guy you asked was last on 2 years ago. Start a new thread. But my response is common sense. Your not gonna be able to have the belt with 3 feet of slack. Just enough for it to not be pulling at you.

Just enough to be comfortable. Not a lot of slack and not a lot of play on the bottom.

I don't wear a seatbelt. And I'm not getting pulled over either. So it must not be law. And any of you don't like it. Too bad. You all can keep your common sense to yourself.

    I don't wear a helmet either.

It's my decision. No one else.

Meanwhile, at the "Oppose All Laws We Don't Like" convention...

I don't know if all these people are still part of this forum, but it's mind boggling that there are those out there who call themselves professional drivers that can't seem to grasp that driving is, yes, a privilege, not a right. And no, you can't use the excuse "I pay taxes, of course it's my right!". We all pay taxes for the military; do you have the right to walk onto a military base any time you wish? Yeah, good luck with that.
You can live your life as you choose when you're not behind the wheel of a vehicle on public roadways. The idea that driving is a right has slowly led to the problems we have today of distracted driving, people street racing through traffic, road rage, etc. Traffic laws, for the most part (and yes, there may be some silly ones out there: seat belt laws are not one of those) are there to keep the general motoring public safe, it's not a free-for-all out there. And yes, we are responsible for the safety of those around us as well as ourselves. That goes for professional drivers as well as the unwashed four wheeler masses. We don't get to live in a bubble out there.
