    After you get it done, make it a point to inspect those from time to time. The problem you'll have is that those will rot, and relatively quickly. The end grain of the posts will suck up moisture like a sponge.

    It's your call of course, but this is really the best way.

    That's the way we do it...if there's a "J" Bolt embedded in the Concrete

    Plus U can forget about using 4" × 4" Support Columns around here, whatever Inspector reviews the Plan will cross out the 4 ×4 and write 6 × 6 in it's place

    My brother and I had to replace all of our parents' deck posts, and that's what we did. The parts of the 6 by's that were in the ground looked like Swiss cheese. We pulled those out and filled the holes with concrete, leaving J anchors in them. That way we could just saw off the posts and reinstall them.

    I wouldn't bury a Support Column under any circumstances due to I'll be the one to get the call when it fails

    Besides that, if it's a Permit Job the Municipality would never approve the Permit App or a Inspection when U deviated from a Approved Plan...they're funny about that!
