If you don't mind my asking, where did you go when you left SNI, and why?

I went to their orientation for local intermodal out of Chicago 5-6 years ago. Pay was like 32 cpm but $31 per load. So I figured 2,000 miles plus 10 loads per week for $950 per week at worst. Not great money, but the domicile that I'd run out of was Elwood, only 20 minutes from my house. I was working for Pepsi out of Chicago, an hour drive in the mornings, and 1.25-2 hour drive home depending on when I got off. Plus I was about to be put on a hood route. So I had to leave even though I didn't mind working there. It was tough, but rewarding work.

Anyways, on the final day of orientation, they said that I'd have to work out of Chicago, not Elwood. They stated that they gave that position to someone else and there was nothing they could do. I left a Chicago based job so I could find something closer to home. So yeah.. I think you all know that I left and never came back. I got a job at the place I've been since then working overnights for about 45 hours per week.

Oddly, they paid me for orientation. $700 gross. So at least that week wasn't a complete waste.

Schneider changed quite a bit. I remember the times when you could run yourself dead with them and be very imaginative with logging. Probably we made about the same $ at 26 cpm back then as new & improved Schneider drivers make now. But you live and you learn that killing yourself for a few extra pesos is really stupid... if you have pesos you need to survive.

Btw, trucking biz does not have a plethora of "good" companies standing by to absorb all the drivers working their way up through the "stepping stones" like Schneider. After all these long years behind the wheel, I believe Schneider gave me a very good idea about industry' averages. I would recommend new drivers not to bet their farm expecting that their trucking careers will give them much more than Schneider can offer (on average).

    I drive my own truck.
    I pull my own trailer.
The reason is beautifully described in the original post.
I wouldn't company drive for orange and after having a mad moment in 2015 I signed onto LS over orange.
I am still walking funny after that experience!!
I am going to have to be REALLY desperate to ever sign on with ANY mega.
Crete stole money from me, they stole money from a friend of mine too. CRE we all know about. So too Werner, Swift, Trans Am and all the other bottom feeders.
I wouldn't work for or 'with' Schneider for all the tea in China.

    jeff18 Thanks this.

Very true what you say but the fact is that the attrition rate amongst new drivers training and driving with a mega is something like less than 1% survival.
If they last a year it is a minor miracle. So the industry doesn't have to absorb them. They are back at the 7/11 or MacDonalds.

The beuty of trucking is that one can become really desperate or even unemployable in as little as a fraction of a second. Even small things can add up to being at the bottom of employment pile where working for Schneider would appear as a hopeless dream.

West Side Transport has a terminal outside Chicago and also has a guaranteed minimum paycheck each week. @DoubleO7 has worked there for awhile and can give you details.
