No Sir-I would not pay you to fuel the truck.I also refuse to pay for a pre-trip/post-trip inspection.I refuse to pay your downtime when a tire blows.I refuse to pay for your 10 hour/34 hour resets.I refuse to pay for your food and i refuse to pay for your toilet paper.
    I know-im a bad boss.
I do supply the Means(truck-job) that gives you a weekly paycheck.Now-the Means needs to be fueled, oiled and inspected daily by you-for if you dont-the Means comes to a halt n so does your paycheck.See how that works?
    Now- why should you do anything for free.Here's 3 for you- Gratitude-Pride-Initiative!These 3 things dont cost you any money out of pocket.These 3 things show your worth as a man/woman. Scenario;
I hired John in 2009.Showed him the ropes.Introduced him to my friends, brokers n dispatchers. We convoyed for 6 months,up n down donner, throwing chains, tarping in the rain, avoiding chicken coops,etc-etc.My little shop n farm was in PA-john lived in south jersey.John shows up a day early-WHY- he's out there washing the truck. He's polishing the wheels n the stacks.I didn't ask him too!
John started learning the books(business)he saw the cost's of operation. He came up w/fuel saving plans. He started booking his own loads. He treated my truck like his name was on the title. He told me he was shutting the truck down for a week to install a 1,200.00 Truckfridge-move this-rewire that-put brake pads n wheel seals on the trailer.Get the picture?
Now-when he was out in wyoming-his fridge at home died.
I called his wife n let her know that Sears was coming out at noon the next day to pick up the old fridge n plug in the brand new one.
2 yrs later-Johns down in texas-his wifes car gets t-boned(totaled).Next day-i bought her a 3,000.00$ car from her family.
These are just 2 examples of the loyalty i expressed to my employee-all because of three little things that he has shown me n has in him.
Fast forward 8 yrs-i'm in Ecuador welding a pipeline-coing home in december w/a hundred grand-going to re-power both trucks(cat platinum).John is running the business solo-making 80 grand a year n he is doing a great job.
All because of a few small things that he does for free!
Now-i have to get back on the road in my 379 after it's re-powered.I'm gonna wind up pulling the trigger on a new Western Star in february-so i'll be hiring a driver. Now dont take offense-but it wont be you!!!!!!!
I need someone whos not gonna charge me to air up a tire!
Hope i explained properly-Drive on n be safe out there!

NJ Turnpike plazas are full service for diesel. There's also an Ambest on the 87 above Albany and a TA on the 44 in MO.

Yes.....John was new....had stars in his eyes....excited, and not so bright.
Glad you two worked out for each other, and loyalty went both ways. But you and John are the very, very rare exception. Try and show drive, pride, and loyalty to 99% of these companies, and all you get in return is screwed over until you quit, and they keep your last check to show their appreciation.

I agree, these companies think its ok to always take from everyone's pocket, then use words like you must have initiative therefore is alright for not paying for certain parts of the job like inspecting their equipment, fueling up, and waiting hours for a trailer to unload or load. I just called them for what they are thief's. They want something for free. TIME IS MONEY

I understand your words.Darn shame.Since i'm in 30+ yrs now-and slowing down-i dont see that side of the business, that takes advantage of the youngins.
Transportation industry lost the reins w/de regulation.Trucking companies grew out of control-still growing out of control.Too big-too many people. To many spoiled/entitled people------ceo's,gm's,dm's,hr,dispatcher's then the driver's.
5 conflicts going on n poop rolls downhill, right off the visor n onto the driver.
Sure was different in the 80's.
I do feel sorry for these guy's/gal's.Guess they have to stand up,change jobs or change professions.Certainly isnt healthy to be unhappy/negative.
