The problem is that I am a good truck driver. I am a terrible Irish Setter. I DO NOT sit 4 to 6 hours for free. There is not one person in the trucking industry that works for free other than a truck driver. In fact, I do not know anyone in any profession that is ok with working for free so why should I or anyone else. Surely I am not the only one that values his(or her) own time.
I make better money than a lot of drivers because I alway haul more speciaized freight. Swinging beef and lamb, cars, oversized loads, expedited freight, and propane among other things, There is close to zero detainment time. I currently work in the oilfield industry. I am home daily and make around $1200.00 to 1500.00 a week.
Here is a good word for you guys, "Industry standard". It is the industry standard to not pay detainment to a driver for unloading. If all companies charged a detainment charge they would make more money and so would the driver. The possitive thing is that a receiver would not want 20 trucks sitting on a lot.

No one here thinks its right, but it is the way it is.

I think It's funny that you have to pay their employes to unload their freight. I dont know what it is now, but back in 03 it was around 60 bucks. I u/l once at the DC in New Braunfels, TX and I asked the lady at the recieving desk what they use the 60 bucks for.....She said it goes into a pot for the companey party they have once a year.... I was like WTF... I then asked when the party was so I can let the other drivers know so we can attend because we payed for it.... That did not go over to well.

First, when you talk about Wal-Mart DC making you pay to unload their freight then maybe you should take a look at your companies contract to haul agreement. Some where in that contract your company or the broker that you got your load from agreed to unload the truck or pay Wal-Mart to unload the truck. The company gets a higher freight rate to have you the truck driver to unload or pay for someone to unload that freight. Ask your company what it says in the contract to haul to who unloads the freight. I found out years ago that companies was getting up to 200 dollars more per load to unload at the receiver and then paying drivers 50 dollars to do the job. Solve the problem by telling your company that you drive for that you will not unload and if you do then it will cost 30 dollars per hour for you to unload from the time you bump the dock. Stand up for your self.
I bet that the company was getting paid for you setting for 8 hours and they fail to tell the driver that part of the contract.
I run a computer log and I am legal all of the time and make a very good living. Here is the secret to this. You only work for a company that pays you for all miles run. If you set for more then a hour then demand to get paid per hour or you will bring the truck home (always make sure that you have a full tank of fuel). There are companines out there the take care of their drivers and some that could care less. Find the one that cares.
If you allow your self to be taken advantage of then it is only your own fault and no one else can you blame. I have been out here trucking for thirty years and believe me I have been where you are. I allowed my self to be taken advantage like you all are writing about. Stand up for your self and tell your dispatcher better yet go straight to the president of the company and say here are my rules that I will drive by when it comes to pay and if you can't meet these rules then I will move on. If you are a good driver and worker then the company will bend over backwards to keep you. And if they don't meet your rules then move on to a better company. Let the other drivers be the sucker. Never get mad get even.
Have a great trip.
