If it's really just 2 or 3 minutes over and not like 15-20 minutes, can't imagine anyone would really care

I guess I'll find out soon enough when elogs go in

    metallifreak10 Thanks this.

The regs don't state anything even remotely close to what you just posted. According to the regs, any driver who is released from duty at the same place he started out from within 12 hours who never leaves the 100 air-mile radius is exempt from keeping a record of his duty status provided the company maintains a record of his hours worked. Since the company has to maintain a record of duty status for OTR drivers anyway, most will simply require a log book be used to meet that requirement. Just use line 4 for your hours worked, and line 1 for your hours off. As for OTR drivers pretending to be short haul, that really isn't covered in the regs. As a short haul driver, you are not required to have any documentation stating such, nor are you required to have any record of your hours worked in the truck with you. If/when you venture out past the 100th air mile, work past the 12th hour, or won't return to your starting location, then you are required to have a RODS for that day only...or if a multiple day trip, the pages for that run. It is a good general rule of thumb to have SOMETHING indicating you were exempt on the days you don't have, but under the regs that isn't necessary. If you are operating a sleeper truck and it appears as though you live in the truck, you won't be convincing ANY officer that you qualify for any local work exceptions. That's another reason I prefer day cabs...the assumption IS that you are probably somewhat local.

Fed Ex Ground used the exception. I ran a local route usually 8-10 hours a day. The only time we had to take the 30 minute break was if we were scheduled for 12 hrs or more. Where I'm at now, still local, requires us to take the 30 minute break regardless because we could be going farther than 100 air miles on any given day. It's set up in our Keller e-log that way.
