I've been reading on here and researching companies until I think I'm more confused now then before I started
Been in engineering and land surveying the last 10 years, market stinks here and I'm ready to do something new. I want to get the ball rolling asap.
I DO NOT have a CDL and am looking for a company that will train. My other concern is finding a good company that is either in my general area (Brooksville, FL) or one that hauls freight here somewhat regular, regional would be ideal. I would like to make it home weekly or at most every two weeks if possible even if it's just for a restart.
So far I've found the following:
Werner - Training and terminal in Lakeland (45 min from house)
Swift - Training in TN and terminal in Ocala (30 min from house)
Roehl - Training in WI and terminal in Jax
CTL - Winter Haven, I know nothing about them
Willis Shaw - Auburndale not sure about training, I know nothing about them
According to Schnieder's website, they are no longer operating school for non cdl drivers.
So, anything else out there I'm missing? Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. As of right now Roehl and Werner are the way I'm leaning. Werner mostly because training is so close, their site says .352cmp >1 yr exp and .372 with 1yr exp. vs Roehl at .30 & .36 respectively. But Roehl has options for 7on7off and 7/4-7/3 along with getting pretty regular from what I can find out.
Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Werner lies. 26 cpm to start. I've heard good things about Roehl. Best bet is to take a good look at the hiring map on the sites. Companies know they need to get you home, so they won't hire you if it will cost them too much in fuel to get you there.
All starter companies run neck and neck, so choose what's right for you. My buddy paid for his own school, and got a local job, home every night. I like being on the road, so I make less money, but rarely home. Decide where you want to be in five years, and plan from there...grandpawspeedy Thanks this. -
Thanks for the info, been reading up on Werner and can't find much good about them. .26cpm, if true, is the lowest out of anyone I've found so far. I was really hoping to find they were decent being I'm so close.
I may be able to swing putting myself through CDL school at a local community college. I think they start another class after the 1st of the year.
I would prefer something local, but I have yet to find anything decent that didn't require 1yr min experience around here. I have a 7yr old and would prefer to be home, but at this point I just need to pay the bills. -
Out of that list above, I think Roehl would be your best choice. They seem to have a better reputation than the others. There are a couple of threads on here about them I believe.
On a side note, where is Brooksville? I lived in Bradenton, Florida for 5 years, and I'm drawing a blank on where Brooksville is, and I should know! -
I think you're right about Roehl, at least out of everything I've found so far. I found Stevens Transport, they will also train but haven't read too much good on them.
As far as Brooksville, you probably drove past it every time you went north! It's right off I-75 at State Road 50, kind of between Ocala and Tampa. -
Local trucking jobs probably arent going to pay you for it cost to go to trucking school. You can make really good money trucking, but it requires staying out six weeks or longer. Most of your major companies require you are out at least 18 days. I would strongly recommend if you like being home or have a family to think about something else. Not sure if you have kids or a wife, but team driving with your spouse can bring home a pretty penny. If you do plan to go through with it allow three weeks for school, one week for orientation and then most companies require 4-6 weeks riding with a trainer, at about 300 a week.
-
Thought so! I use to drive from FL to WI and back every summer except the last couple of summers we lived down there. I love the Ocala area, it's thoroughbred country!
-
Beeracuda, check out armellini, they are in your area, can get you home several times a week, pay very well, and they take students.
-
schnieder not taking non cdl's now? #### I was just about to check them out, so is it better just do Local school in your state which is probably more cost then heading out with one of the other schools for your OTR experience?
-
Unless you are paying cash, either way you have to pay the money back to somebody.
