So brand new 2018 Wester Star, was washing and noticed this cut on my driver side steer. Can't get ahold of my boss so I'm curious what you guys think. Is this drivable or should I get a new tire asap? It's cut into the side wall, the further down the less deep. Up top it's about a solid 1/4" into the tire....

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

I would not drive with that tire.

It would probably hold up, but if the feds catch it, it's going to cost a bunch more than if you get it replaced ASAP.

Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking. I just didn't know if it could blow out suddenly with a cut like that. I haul heavy all the time (100k +), so just want to make sure.

I wouldn't drive it any further to be safe while someone came and replaced it.

Unfortunately my boss is hard to get ahold of...and it doesn't help that I just gave my notice. Not sure he'll be jumping to replace a new steer tire, but it's obviously gotta be changed. I guess when I don't show up tomorrow morning he might answer his phone lol

A steer/any tire can always blow out suddenly. If you can look down in the crack and don't see any cord, it would probably be hard to measure the extent to which the tire was weakened. Nothing like replacing a new steer tire with a new steer tire.

Put it this way ... would you feel confident taking a 45 mph looping exit ramp with that weak link?

Proceeding straight, that tire may run years. But it's the higher speed tighter turns that's going to cause that tire to fail. And consequently, that's the last place you want a steer tire to fail.

Those steer tire shoulders have a lot expected of them in turns, without a critical defect you now have.

You are not serious are you?

Of course you can't drive with that.

Call your boss, if you can't get a hold of him, then find someone else who can.
