The extra challenge aspect of open deck that you mentioned is the reason for my interest. Getting dirty doesn't bother me, I do a lot of off road motorcycle riding and racing. That also helps motivate me to try and stay in some sort of shape.

Don't be shy to look for a smaller carrier. They'll pair you up with a local guy and teach you the ropes. Farmers are another great avenue. Hang out at cattle sale barns and talk to guys.
Nothing wrong with hauling hay on a flatbed to start. That could lead to yanking a bull rack or a hopper. Sure the megas tell a good story but there's a big world out there that doesn't involve a mega carrier.G13Tomcat, TripleSix and TPS Report Thank this. -

Flatbed is FUN FUN FUN. You will love it, particularly when you realize how little you have to do besides tarp, chain and strapping. Some of the work is actually involving your mind regarding placement wherever it needs to be on "Your deck" to be legal.
Im a few years short of 60 and can easily get into flatbedding again after a bit of breaking off rust, but considering the wear and tear on my chassis, they will have to advance medical technology and replace a few things before I can become DOT legal again medically. I wont be around that long anyhow.
There is a big different between motivation, physical fitness and so forth, you should consider yourself very lucky to be where you are at in life getting into a part of trucking that is actually going to keep you fit.
Good luck!TPS Report, Lepton1 and born&raisedintheusa Thank this. -
If you can get a full size lumber tarp off the ground and onto the deck of the trailer, chances are you will succeed in deck work.
