We are trying to locate a bin decoder for our 1949 Peterbilt ... the vin is only 5 digits. We need to confirm the year if the truck! All the decoders require 17 digits... any helpful information. Is appreciated

Welcome aboard, 49, any pics? Have you tried this Courtland Truck Works? California. They specialize in old Pete's. Lot's of old farts here have or have driven old Pete's. Mine in avatar was a '72 359.

VIN were not used until 1954. Should be a list of serial # for pete's somewhere. I know Wisconsin hysterical society has list of all the serial # for IHC trucks going back 100 years.

I know older pickups used the engine ID# for a vin. And yeah, I've seen that WHS thing for IH trucks. Wonder what the deal is with that? They weren't even made in Wis.

They stamped the frame at left spring hangar on the IHC to match serial # tag that was located either at toe board, on fire wall and on some on the floor next to passenger door.
That's a '42 K model to the left I sold after chopping roof 3". I included the piece of frame rail with the serial # for the buyer. He thought it great i had foresight to cut the piece out. Only decent part of the frame.
Peterbilt must have a club or historical site.Last edited: Sep 13, 2017
