Hey everyone, I've read a bunch and still have more to take but was hoping for some help with a few questions I got, and everyone here seems very cool.
My wife and I got into car hauling after I retired from the Marines in 2014, but had to step away for personal reasons a few months ago and sold our truck. We missed being O/O's, so we decided to do the Schneider lease thing. Big mistake, their rates suck and we miss running specialized freight.
So we're taking our truck to Landstar, and had a few questions.
- trying to decide between a step deck or rgn double drop, what can we make more consistent money with?
- is there that much of a difference in income of freight between running 22.5 or 17.5 tires? We've ran 17.5, 19.5, and 22.5 and know the pita the smaller tires can bring with them.
- how's the freight in the winter time- still good or do some swap to dry van for the season?
We look forward to gaining some knowledge from y'all

Stepbdeck is the most versatile for spot market freight. Land star may have more work for a double drop. Low pro step spread axle would be my first choice.
You can charge more for some freight having a low pro step. They can be more challenging to tarp.
I like the combo load levellers and ramp options.MansaMusa77, Lepton1, Broke Down 69 and 3 others Thank this. -
So this is pretty much a Landstar question not a trailer question....

Don't forget ramps, you have to have ramps. Ramps are important.MansaMusa77, cke, 4mer trucker and 3 others Thank this.

Not necessarily a Landstar question, be but we weren't sure how to approach it. I'm hoping some here have experience with Landstar that can chime in, and others with what they have been successful running. We're leaning toward a 53' drop deck with axle slide so I can run all 48, but at the same time, wonder about missing out on stuff normally run on a rgn. But at the same time we don't wanna get in over our heads bring new to this type of freight.
MansaMusa77 Thanks this. -
I think there's a land star section... maybe ask there? I would start with a step deck if you've never done any double drop work.
MansaMusa77 and DDlighttruck Thank this. -
Take from a guy who knows almost nothing about what your asking. I would go with a step, I can't see the viability of a detach leased to a mega when you're starting out. A step is more versatile compared to a detach, has less of a learning curve and should be cheaper and easier to get rid of.
Lepton1, Broke Down 69, cke and 6 others Thank this.
